The New York Jets have claimed former San Diego State cornerback Leon McFadden on waivers after the Cleveland Browns cut him earlier this week.
The Browns drafted McFadden in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He played in all 16 games as a rookie, recording 19 total tackles and one pass-defended.
McFadden played well in the preseason, recording 12 tackles over the Browns' four tune-up games. The former Aztec learned head coach Mike Pettine's defensive system in preseason, most likely a system very similar to the one Pettine ran with Rex Ryan when Pettine was New York's defensive coordinator from 2009-2012.
The Jets desperately need depth at cornerback. New York's No. 1 cornerback Dee Milner is doubtful for the season opener with a high ankle sprain. The Jets also recently suspended and released Dimitri Patterson, their other projected starting corner, after what ESPN.com calls an "unexcused absence last weekend." And wait, there's more: rookie cornerback Dexter McDougle is out for the season with a knee injury he sustained in August.
McFadden attended SDSU from 2009 to 2012 where he earned All-MWC First Team honors for three consecutive years (sophomore through senior season). He recorded 188 tackles, eight interceptions and 39 pass-breakups in his SDSU career.
