San Diego State takes sole possession of first place in the MWC-West division by dominating the Rainbow Warriors with their ball control attack. Donnel Pumphrey has another huge running game and finds himself among nation's best rushers.

The San Diego State Aztecs (4-3, 3-1 Mountain West) took control of the MWC-West division by manhandling the stout Warriors from Hawaii 20-10. Hawaii (2-5, 1-1 MW) had gained great respect from head coach Rocky Long after three one-score losses to top-tier opponents: Washington, Oregon State, and Colorado; and by putting 38 points on the scoreboard in its win against Wyoming in the previous game. In this Saturday night tilt at Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego State dominated as the Aztecs' offense (457 total yards) outperformed the Warriors' offense (264 total yards).

Quarterback: B-

Senior quarterback Quinn Kaehler resumed his starting duties after missing a game and half with a sprained right shoulder. It appears as if Kaehler, while occasionally inaccurate, has regained much of his arm strength, which is a great indication of what we might expect from him for the remaining five games of the season. Kaehler was far from perfect, but did manage to complete 13 of 24 pass attempts for 174 yards, including a pretty 26-yard touchdown toss to wide receiver Lloyd Mills. It was his first touchdown pass since the season opener against Northern Arizona. Kaehler slightly improved his reads on his progressions, connecting to 10 different receivers, but work remains to be done there. With a bye week ahead, he should be near 100 percent for the Nevada game on November 1.

Running Backs: A

The running game continued to shine as Donnel Pumphrey ran for 182 yards and a touchdown on 25 attempts. Pumphrey's speed and ability to make defenders miss at all levels continues to turn heads as he is among the elite rushers in the nation in terms of total yards gained (989, seventh in FBS Division I) and touchdowns (11, fourth in FBS Division I). Complementing Pumphrey were junior Chase Price, redshirt freshman Marcus Stamps, junior fullback Dakota Gordon and quarterback Kaehler who combined for 101 more yards. Entering the game, Hawaii had a good idea that San Diego State would be a run first, pass second team, but still could not stop the Aztec running attack, allowing 283 total rushing yards.

Wide Receivers: B-

The Aztecs are still looking for a couple of their talented receivers to step up and make big plays. Route running, creating separation and handling balls that are slightly off target continue to present an opportunity for improvement. Mills stepped up this week, catching four balls for 42 yards including a great catch for a 26-yard touchdown. No other receiver caught more than one pass. The Aztecs have good news on the Ezell Ruffin front. It appears as if their top receiver may be ready for the Nevada game.

Offensive Line: A-

Once again, the offensive line performed well, creating some gaping holes for the running game. Coach Long recognized that the Hawaii front seven would be particularly challenging given their size, but the Aztec offensive line won the battle and protected Kaehler throughout the game. Kaehler had plenty of time in the pocket to help him regain the confidence in his passing ability.

Defensive Line: B+

Sophomore defensive lineman Alex Barrett continues to be a nuisance to opposing offenses, recording his third sack of the season. The defensive line applied good pressure for the whole game and helped limit the Hawaii running game to less than 100 yards on the day.

Linebackers: B+

The San Diego State linebackers played well behind a strong effort from sophomore Calvin Munson (seven tackles) and senior Josh Gavert (five tackles). Senior Derek Largent played well in his return after missing a couple of games due to an emergency appendectomy. Senior Cody Galea is also playing at a high level, and with redshirt-junior Jake Fely's return imminent, the linebacker crew will be in good shape for the foreseeable future.

Secondary: A-

Sophomore Na'Im McGee played what may have been his best game of the season, recording eight tackles. Sophomores Damontae Kazee and Malik Smith each had a fourth quarter interception, thwarting any chance for a Hawaii comeback. Kazee and senior J.J. Whittaker each did a nice job breaking up multiple passes without committing pass interference penalties. The Hawaii passing game was limited to 174 yards, and the Rainbow Warriors were fortunate to score at the end of the first half on a 39-yard "Hail Mary" pass that deflected off of McGee's chest into the arms of a Hawaii receiver in the end zone.

Special Teams: C+

The special teams had their first off day of the season. There was a tripping penalty on the opening kickoff return, a fumbled punt return by redshirt-freshman Billy Vaughn, Jr., and a rare miss on a 31-yard field goal attempt by junior Donny Hageman. He did, however, make field goals of 36 and 23 yards in the game. Senior punter Joel Alesi had an off night by his standards averaging only 33 yards on his four punts, with one landing inside the 20-yard line. The San Diego State kickoff coverage team allowed a 100-yard return to open the second half, but it was called back due to a Hawaii holding penalty.

Stars of the game:

Running back Donnel Pumphrey, safety Na'Im McGee and kicker Donny Hageman earn my offensive, defensive and special teams stars of the game, respectively.

The latest Mountain West power poll is out and there is a lot of movement now that conference play is underway.

Once conference play began it made sense that these rankings would slowly sort themselves out, but that does not seem to be the case. There was either some course correcting from last week's poll, or this entire league is wildly unpredictable. I am leaning to the latter.

Colorado State holds down the top spot once again after its win over Utah State, and that also allowed Boise State to take the second spot behind the Rams. After those two spots things just get weird. Air Force moved up to the third spot -- previously they were No. 6 -- after beating New Mexico, and that is not all that weird.

Then there is Fresno State who moved up two spots despite losing to Boise State Friday night, and they jumped San Jose State who beat Wyoming. Utah State took only a two spot tumble and it is interesting to see the Aggies fall two spots because while they lost to Colorado State by just three points, they are down to their third-string quarterback now that Darrell Garretson is injured and possibly gone for the rest of the season.

Also, despite Nevada topping BYU, and on the road, they fell one spot in the poll.

Have a look at the latest set of rankings.

Jeremy and Chris review all of the close and exciting games from this past week.

Jeremy and Chris are back to discuss Week 8 which featured many close and exciting games this week. Each game was decided by 10 points or less this week and it is just showing how close these teams in this league are closer than people think.

A bad Hawaii team hung close to San Diego State, Nevada scored 29 straight points to top BYU and then there was San Jose State who dominated the stat sheet against Wyoming but needed overtime to get the win. Colorado State edged out Utah State who are now down to its third-string quarterback.

We both attempt to figure out who will win the West and Mountain Divisions but at this point in time the West is completely up for grabs, and while the Mountain Division is a bit more sorted out there is still a lot of football left to be played.

The Rams were perhaps the big winners from the weekend, but considering it is Boise State that still holds the edge in the Mountain division, how do the bowl experts see the rest of the season playing out?

The weekend's Mountain West action did only a little to separate the contenders from the pretenders. On one end, Hawaii's brief run atop the West division (fun while it lasted, I'm sure) came to a halt in San Diego, while Wyoming fell flat at home against San Jose State. On the other end, Boise State, Air Force and Colorado State all survived tests at home, with the Rams becoming the first MWC team to reach the necessary six wins.

What's become clear is that the conference's strength is concentrated in the Mountain division, but will Boise State be able to take its tiebreaker to the bank at season's end?

For a quick refresher, here is the list of bowls with which the Mountain West is affiliated, along with the potential opponent. The bowls have an order in which they are allowed to pick teams, and the Las Vegas Bowl picks first. The Hawaii, New Mexico and New Orleans will share picks three, four and five, while the Potato Bowl picks sixth. Also note that the conference has secondary ties with the Armed Forces Bowl and Cactus Bowl.

Little has changed from last week, though it is surprising that Kirk is somewhat down on the Nevada Wolf Pack. After yesterday's come-from-behind victory against a game BYU squad, they are one of just two teams in the West (the other being San Diego State) sitting at 4-3 for now. Perhaps he feels they did not do themselves any favors with their tough start to conference play -- they beat an SJSU team they probably should've and sit a tier below CSU and Boise with their losses -- but it will be shocking if they're still on the outside looking in after a few more weeks.

Palm's projection is more or less the same as it was a week ago, as Air Force is still out of the picture here. This is a surprise considering the cushiness the Falcons will enjoy in the next two weeks: The Commander-in-Chief trophy is theirs for the taking next Saturday at Army, and a subsequent trip to Vegas doesn't make for the most daunting two-game road trip. With a win against Boise already in hand, they control their own destiny as long as they keep winning.

The support that Fresno State continues to receive puzzles me. With only four games left on the schedule, the 3-5 Bulldogs need three wins and... quite frankly, are we certain they can beat anyone at this point? Wyoming and SJSU have shown a capacity to surprise, Nevada is probably the class of the division and Hawaii is very Hawaii-like, as usual. You can tell me if you see it, but I definitely do not now.

Next, we'll take a look at what ESPN's Brett McMurphy and Mark Schlabach have to say:

I think the one most interesting matchup in these particular slates is Boise State's entry into the Cactus Bowl against a decent Pac-12 team. I suspect this is mostly built upon the cachet that the Broncos have built up over the years, though I wonder whether McMurphy still believes they can win the Mountain West. My first inclination says yes, but the Rams benefit from a favorable matchup against Brett Hundley's Bruins in both scenarios.

Last but not least are my own bowl picks, which are essentially an acknowledgment that my preseason prediction is very much on the ropes. Apologies to Utah State, but though you've shown toughness to hang around despite losing two quarterbacks and your best defensive player, a division title seems to be out of reach. I also maintain that Air Force/Georgia Southern would be an extremely fun run-run-run-run-some-more game to watch. Tell me I'm wrong.

Second week in a row the Wyoming Cowboys relinquish a 2nd half lead in conference play.

The Wyoming Cowboys go down in defeat after a 27-20 overtime loss to the hands of the San Jose State Spartans in front of a Homecoming crowd of 19,627 fans in War Memorial Stadium. The Cowboys' game-winning 46-yard field goal attempt with two seconds left in regulation went off the right upright and the Spartans scored a touchdown on their first overtime possession, before holding the Pokes out of the endzone on defense.

"Obviously, there are things we can do better as a football team," Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl said. "I thought we showed resiliency a couple of times during the game. We knew that it was going to be a close game and it turned out that way."

The Cowboys (3-4, 1-2 Mountain West) and Spartans (3-3, 2-1 Mountain West) were deadlocked in a 10-10 back-and-forth affair through three quarters, before combining for 20 points in the fourth quarter. Wyoming looked to have the game in hand with a three-point lead late in the game, but SJSU converted a 50-yard field goal with 42 seconds left to tie the contest. Back came the Cowboys with a dramatic drive for a 46-yard field goal attempt that would have won the game, but Stuart Williams' kick bounced off the right upright to send the game to an extra period. The Spartans found the endzone with a four-yard touchdown pass on their possession and held on Wyoming's fourth-and-three attempt to secure the victory.

"They have the No. 1 defense in the league and it was going to be hard moving the ball," Bohl said. "They are a good defense. We needed to get on track better and I thought we had chances in the first half. In the second half, we did take advantage of some chances, which I'm pleased with."

The Cowboys offense as a whole struggled throughout much of the ballgame, not being able to sustain any type of drives. The offense was only able to produce 11 first downs and 277 total offensive yards.

Shaun Wick lead the Cowboys on the ground 97 yards on 16 carries and included a 48-yard scoring scamper that moved him into ninth in Cowboy history with 18 in his career. He has five runs of 40-or-more yards this season. Wick was stymied through the first three quarters, though, as he gained 89 of his yards in the fourth quarter and overtime. Senior quarterback Colby Kirkegaard went 11-of-27 through the air for 119 yards, including finding Wick four times for 27 yards. Senior wide receiver Dominic Rufran finished with two catches for 37 yards to extend his streak of consecutive games with at least one reception to 44 games, tied for the longest current streak in the NCAA. The Cowboys were without their second leading rusher in D.J. May who was suspended for the contest.

Defensively, redshirt freshman safety Tim Kamana and senior safety Jesse Sampson finished with 10 tackles a piece, both career highs. Junior defensive end Eddie Yarbrough made eight stops, including 3.5 tackles for loss to go with two sacks and a forced fumble. The Cowboy defense finished with a season-high eight tackles for loss. The defense as a whole looked better than they did the prior weekend against Hawaii but there is still plenty of room for growth.

The first half was a defensive battle, as the two teams combined for just one touchdown and two field goals. The Spartans opened the scoring with a 34-yard field goal on their opening drive, but missed a 47-yard attempt on their next possession. The Cowboys responded with a 36-yard field goal from Williams to tie the contest at 3-3 shortly into the second quarter. The kick capped a 17-play drive that took 9:20, both season highs for the Pokes. SJSU took a 10-3 lead into halftime thanks to a 13-yard touchdown pass with three seconds left in the second quarter.

San Jose State continued to move the ball in the second half, but couldn't produce points. The Spartans missed a 31-yard field goal on their opening drive of the second half, before Yarbrough forced a fumble on their second drive that sophomore nose tackle Chase Appleby recovered. The Wyoming defense came up big again on SJSU's ensuing drive when senior cornerback Blair Burns ripped the ball out and returned the fumble 63 yards for a touchdown.

The Spartans retook a 17-10 lead early in the fourth quarter, before Wick burst through the middle on a fourth-and-one play for a 48-yard score. Williams connected on a 19-yard field goal to give Wyoming a 20-17 lead with just under five minutes left before the final theatrics.

The Cowboys had a chance to put the game away when the Spartans had the ball fourth-and-two but connected for a 18-yard gain. Replay on the video board in the stadium showed the ball coming loose from running back Tyler Ervin as safety Kamana defended.

But the call on the field was confirmed and ruled dual possession, which always goes to the offensive player. Tim Harkins, Wyoming sports information director, said officials view television footage of all replays (ESPN 3). The video in the stadium on the video board was Wyoming's in-house feed. The only time officials use in-house video feeds is when there is no TV coverage/footage.

Wyoming heads back out on the road for its next contest, the annual Border War rivalry game against the (6-1, 2-1 Mountain West) Colorado State Rams. Kickoff is slated for 5:00 PM next Saturday from Hughes Stadium in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Colorado State earned a few more points in the latest polls, but they are still on the outside looking in on the latest top 25 polls.

The Colorado State Rams improved to 6-1 on the year after getting a big Mountain West win, 16-13, over Mountain foe Utah State. When it comes to the national polls, the Rams are sill left outside the top 25. In the USA TODAY Coaches polls, Colorado State earned more points this week to have a grand total of 18, and that places them at 30.

However, the No. 25 team is West Virginia and they have 143 points, so the Rams have a long way to go to possibly be ranked, and its schedule does not have any heavy hitters the rest of the way. So, all Colorado State can do is keep winning and hope that is enough to be ranked sometime during the season.
