Jeremy and Chris breakdown the Heart of Dallas Bowl as well as some basketball talk.

The podcast is back with Jeremy and Chris talking about UNLV's Heart of Dallas bowl loss to North Texas, and also we dive into some hoops since conference play is beginning. The Rebels loss was not necessarily what they were doing wrong but it was more of what the Mean Green was doing on the defensive side of the ball to stop the UNLV offense,

We then dive into hoops to talk about how Air Force is the surprise team of the league is Air Force and Nevada who is 2-0, but it may not last long for either team. The Falcons may have a better shot at keeping up this success since their recent win was a victory on the road at UNLV. Plus, we get into San Diego State's win over Kansas and what the post season holds for the Mountain West teams.

UNLV had no answer on offense or defense in the second half against North Texas in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

This kick off return by UNLV wide receiver Marcus Sullivan who went untouched but tripped and fell pretty much describes how the Rebels played for most of the Heart of Dallas Bowl in their 36-14 loss against North Texas.

The game did start of well for UNLV as they took their opening drive 95 yards on eight plays to go up 7-0, but after that very little went right for the Rebels. After that first scoring drive UNLV punted six on their next seven drives. The first big mistake for UNLV was when the defense forced North Texas to punt on their second drive but Keith Whitely fumbled the punt and allowed the Mean Green to score their first touchdown and tie the game.

The game was tied at seven heading into the half but the North Texas defense showed that they are a good unit was able to get after UNLV quarterback Caleb Herring and sacked him five times. The UNLV offense managed just 101 yards after their opening drive and only 65 in the second half. Fifty of those yards came on the Rebels only touchdown in the second half.

Herring completed just 22 of 41 passes for 196 yards with two touchdowns, and he threw a late interception as the Rebels were attempting to comeback, and then running back Tim Cornett was to just 33 yards which is the same amount Herring earned.

The UNLV defense did not fair much better as they were worn down by North Texas' offense which had three consecutive second half touchdown drives that lasted 12, 12 and 10 plays. The Rebels defense had no answer for the North Texas balanced attack.

No single player was superb for the Mean Green; quarterback Derek Thompson completed 21 of 30 passes for 256 yards and a pair of score, and then the running game was led by the combo of Brandin Byrd and Brelan Chancellor who combined for 99 yards. Chancellor was more efficient as he scored two touchdowns and averaged 6.7 yards per carry on seven attempts, plus he caught six passes for 74 yards.

This second half for UNLV could easily be argued as their worse of the season and if not it rivals the second half against Minnesota back in Week 1 where UNLV just fell apart and allowed 35 second half points.

Even in the loss against North Texas on New Year's Day, this was a big accomplishment for UNLV and their football program. This was their first bowl game since 2000 and even though the team loses a good chunk of talent next year this bowl game appearance can be used as motivation for the 2014 season.

UNLV's offense has been stifled and trail 21-7 to start the fourth quarter.

North Texas' defense is that good and they have stepped up their game in the second half to completely shutdown the UNLV offense in the third quarter. The Mean Green offense also is having a good game and lead the Rebels 21-7 to start the fourth quarter.

After UNLV's opening drive in the first quarter they easily drove the ball down the field to score a touchdown on a drive that lasted eight plays and 95 yards. After that the offense punted five times and missed a field goal, and had just 131 yards since that opening drive.

UNLV muffed a punt to allow North Texas an easy touchdown and the teams went back-and-forth in the first half with no points. North Texas took their first two drives for a touchdown in the second half to have a two touchdown lead at the start of the fourth quarter.

The way North Texas' defense has played in the second half this two touchdown lead might just be too much for UNLV to recover. UNLV's first drive of the fourth quarter resulted in a punt.

All of the game day details between UNLV and North Texas in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

UNLV is in their first bowl game since 2000 as they take on North Texas in the <strike>Zombie Cotton Bowl</strike> Heart of Dallas Bowl which is played in the Cotton Bowl. This is also the first bowl game in a long time for North Texas as their last bowl game was in 2003.

Most teams are evenly matched on offense as they each average just over 30 points per game, but the difference between the two teams is that North Texas has a much better defense than UNLV.

For UNLV to get a bowl win over North Texas is to get running back Tim Cornett going early on, and then they also need their passing game to open up as well between Caleb Herring and Devante Davis. Even with North Texas' defense being a top-30 unit, the UNLV offense is good enough to score points against the Mean Green, but it all depends on how quickly the UNLV offense gets going.

Even though UNLV is losing money on their trip to the Heart of Dallas Bowl, they are perfectly fine with the other benefits of going to a bowl game.

The Heart of Dallas Bowl is the first postseason game for UNLV football game since the Rebels stayed home to play in the Las Vegas Bowl back in 2000. Safe to say that this is a big deal for UNLV football to make it to a bowl game.

This bowl game pays out $1.1 million but the stupid rule of ticket allotment forces UNLV to be responsible of $400,000 worth of tickets, so far they have sold just 300 of their 5,000 ticket allotments. That is twice as much as the Armed Forces Bowl which UNLV swapped from, and due to that UNLV will ask for some help from the league to cover their likely loss.

We could dive into the scam that is ticket guarantees, but that is something for another day; at least this year the bowl game did not advertise tickets on Groupon for half off like they did last season.

Athletic director Tina Kunzer-Murphy knows there is a loss and is not worried about what the loss will be since being in a bowl game will help the school in other ways:

"I don't think you put a price on it," Kunzer-Murphy said. "... I think you're going to see the dividends over the years because of something like this tomorrow morning on national TV."

UNLV being a bowl game is a big deal for exposure to help with recruiting and even getting a few more applicants to the school. Plus, with this game being the first game in the morning there will be a decent amount of people watching this game as the appetizer to the other bowl games, but any exposure is good exposure even if it means they will be costing

A statistical breakdown between UNLV and North Texas for the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

UNLV is in their first bowl game since the 2000 Las Vegas Bowl and North Texas is back in the post season for the first time since 2004, so each team is looking for a good post season showing in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. When looking at the advanced stats between each team it does make sense to see why North Texas is a 6.5-point favorite over UNLV.

The biggest difference between the two is the special teams and defense where North Texas has a huge advantage, but on offense the two teams are fairly even. North Texas' defense is borderline elite as they are No. 28 in F/+ defensive ratings. Even with North Texas being rated that high the UNLV offense should be able to have some success moving the ball.

The only area where UNLV looks to have an edge is in long drives of 10 or more plays where they are ninth in the nation and they are good at avoiding being sacked on standard downs, but that may be more due to the Rebels handing the ball off to Tim Cornett instead of passing.

One can get lost in this stats as this is a ton of information from Football Outsiders or Football Study Guide and it is a great way to go way deep between these two teams

Jeremy and Chris recap the five Mountain West bowl games and also preview the Zombie Cotton Bowl.

Jeremy and Chris are back for another show where we breakdown the five completed bowl games as well as the upcoming <strike>Zombie Cotton Bowl</strike> Heart of Dallas Bowl game between North Texas and UNLV.

We go through the games and agree that the New Mexico Bowl is still the best bowl game to date, Fresno State's toilet of a game, the blowout Idaho Bowl, Boise State doesn't show up in Hawaii, again, and also the defensive -- or boring, depending on one's view -- game between Utah State and Northern Illinois.

Here are your many ways to listen to the show: Obviously listen below, over at Sound Cloud, Stitcher Radio and also iTunes.
