Senior quarterback Joe Southwick is expected to get the start against New Mexico on Saturday night.

Boise State will more than likely be getting senior quarterback Joe Southwick back in the lineup when the Broncos close out the season on Saturday night against New Mexico. Southwick will not only play but head coach Chris Petersen said on Monday that he likely will be starting.

Southwick has been out of the lineup since Oct. 19 which is when he suffered a broken ankle against Nevada, and Grant Hedrick has been under center in his absence. Last Monday, Southwick was practicing with the team and was considered an "emergency, emergency" option against San Diego State.

"I expect for him to play, and that's all I know," Petersen told the media Monday afternoon. "We'll kind of see. ... This week in practice will tell us a lot. We don't want to put a guy out there ... who can't defend himself."

One has to wonder if Hedrick's slow start against San Diego State had anything to do with announcing Southwick to be in the lineup on Saturday.

This week's or practice will determine how much playing time Southwick will get on Saturday night.

Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick practiced for the first time since breaking his ankle, yet his status to return is still a question.

Boise State could have a quarterback controversy heading into the final weeks of the season. Starting quarterback Joe Southwick was on the sideline of the Wyoming game and throwing passes, albeit in jeans, and on Monday he returned to practice.

Heading into the Wyoming game head coach Chris Peteresen told the media it is too early to tell what Southwick's status will be once he is healthy:

"I'm not going to sit here three weeks out or whatever we are and say this is what's going to happen," Petersen said. "A lot happens, we know, in this game in one day, let alone weeks. Grant's our guy. We're going with him. We'll see when Joe gets back and go from there."

Southwick broke his ankle on the first play against Nevada back on Oct. 19, and speculation that Southwick could return just five weeks after surgery. One month after the injury Southwick was practicing, but Peteresen said that Southwick is not cleared but once he is there will be a roll for him on the team.

Today's date is Nov. 18 and that is four weeks after the injury and three-and-a-half after surgery; if Southwick is back on the field that means his return could be sooner than later. In our Week 12 podcast recap we discussed briefly on what Boise State would do if Southwick was healthy to play. The thoughts we had revolved around how much practice time Southwick would have before he could have the chance to reclaim his starting role.

Having two quarterbacks is a great problem for Boise State to have as Grant Hedrick is playing well with a 3-1 record under center, which includes the Nevada game where he took over during the Broncos first drive of the game.

There is no way Southwick to play this Saturday against San Diego State, for one he is not cleared and the second is that there is no reason to push him back in the lineup going up against a rapidly improving Aztec squad. The New Mexico game on Nov. 30 would be six weeks after the injury and that could be a key date for Southwick's return.

Southwick is doing all he can do play in his final games at Boise State, but the decision will come down to the coaches who will want to know how healthy Southwick is plus they need to figure in what quarterback gives the team the best chance to win since Hedrick is playing well.

Petersen and the offensive coaching staff will have to make the tough call in the next few weeks to decide who will be their quarterback under center. The decision is always tough but Boise State is on their way to a conference title game, and that adds even more pressure to the decision.

Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick had surgery on Monday to repair his broken ankle.

Boise State head coach Chris Petersen is optimistic that quarterback Joe Southwick could actually return to the lineup before the end of the regular season despite breaking his right ankle last Saturday against Nevada. Southwick had surgery on Monday afternoon and Petersen said that his quarterback could return within a "five-week window."

However, that five-week comment by Petersen was just speculation on his part. If Southwick is to return in five weeks it would be against San Diego State on Nov. 23. If he is healthy then Southwick could play in that game against the Azetcs, at home on senior day the following week against New Mexico and then possibly the Mountain West title game.

Five weeks seems extremely optimistic but as a commenter pointed out, there have been plenty of examples from Boise State players who came back to play sooner rather than later from a broken ankle.

Here is what out commenter marcsulf recalls from Boise State history of broken ankles:

On November 27, 2009, Austin Pettis broke his ankle in the Nevada game. On January 4, 2010, 38 days later, he played in the Fiesta Bowl against TCU. He recorded a key 4th down reception for a 1st down in the 2nd quarter at the TCU 20. That drive resulted in a Bronco field goal.

On September 7, 2002, Ryan Dinwiddie broke his ankle in the Arkansas game. On October 18, 2002, 41 days later, he entered the game in the second quarter against Fresno State. He went 19 of 22 for 406 yds and 5 TDs.

Joe broke his ankle on October 19. If we give him 42 days to recover from his injury, that means he should be able to return on November 30 for senior day at Bronco stadium against New Mexico. Given that he is a senior starting QB, and that would be his last chance to play on the Blue, I fully expect that will happen.

There is precedent for a player with a broken ankle to come back to finish the season. For now, it is just the waiting game to see how quickly Southwick can recover.

Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick does have a confirmed broken ankle, but there is a possibility that he could return.

Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick left in the first quarter against Nevada on Saturday night with a right leg injury, and it has now been confirmed that he does have a broken right ankle.

A broken ankle is a serious injury and normally can take 9 to 12 weeks, and possibly even more for people who play sports, so it seems odd that head coach Chris Petersen said that it is possible that Southwick could return this year. It is likely that Southwick is done for the season, or at least until there is more information.

There is a lot more to look into Southwick's ankle such as surgery and if screws are need; those things could determine how long that he could be out. Southwick left the game on he was tackled on a 7-yard run on his first play when he landed awkwardly on his right ankle when tackled.

This is a big blow for Boise State going forward, but luckily for the Broncos they have a capable backup in Grant Hedrick. The Broncos did end up defeating Nevada, 34-17, and Hedrick did enough to get the win. He ended up completing 18 of 21 passes for 151 yards with an interception, but he did have a great night running the ball with 115 yards and two touchdowns.

The Boise State radio broadcast is speculating that Joe Southwick has a broken ankle and done for the year.

The Boise State radio broadcast on Saturday night is saying that the possible injury to quarterback Joe Southwick is a broken ankle, and others are saying it is a broken foot. Regardless of the area of the right lower extremity the season for Soutwhick is likely over.

With Southwick possibly out for the season, the Broncos will turn to capable backup Grant Hedrick. In Saturday night's game against Nevada Hedrick ran the ball well with over 100 yards, but while his passing was efficient he did not even crack the 150 yard mark and did throw an interception in Boise State's win over Nevada.

Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick left the game against Nevada early in the first quarter.

Early in the game against Nevada on Saturday night, Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick was knocked out of the game with a right ankle injury. Southwick was on crutches and eventually left the game on a cart; the injury looks serious enough that he could even miss Friday night's game against BYU.

Southwick injured his right ankle when he was tackled on his first play of scrimmage which was a 7-yard run. Coming off the bench for Southwick is capable backup Grant Hedrick. Hedrick is a good backup but he is no Southwick and losing him for an extended period of time would be devastating. Boise State has a quick turn around and travels to play BYU this Friday night.

So far against Nevada, Hedrick has completed 4 of 6 passes for 21 yards with an interception, and he also has rushed for another 42 yards nearing the half. Hedrick has talent but so far against rival Nevada he is having a tough time moving the ball. Boise State will need to make some halftime adjustments with Hedrick in the game.
