Despite a last minute burst, Colorado State pulled away from the falcons to notch their 21st win of the season.

Boy, the Falcons must feel absolutely snared. How often do you lose a game when your leading scorer scores 45 points? Give the Rams credit though, Colorado State dominated on the glass and grabbed a total 39 boards in a game that saw the Rams lead the entire second half.

The Rams controlled much of this game, sparking a 14-9 run with 3:47 remaining in the first half to lead 48-40 at the break and then never gave up the lead throughout the game.

In G Mark Lyons last game against the Rams, he laid it all out on the line and scored a career high 45 points on 17 of 25 shooting. How fitting. Lyons led the team in scoring, G Todd Fletcher scored 11 points and had 6 rebounds, C Taylor Broekhuis had 7 points and 2 steals, while F Kamyrn Williams came of the bench and scored 7 points, grabbed 3 rebound and dished out 3 assists.

The Rams took a more traditional route by not having one playing take all of their shots, though if you can shoot like Lyons why wouldn't you? The Rams got little help form their bench and instead saw almost all of their points come from their 5 seniors. G Dorian Green lead the rams with 22 points and 3 assists, F-C Colton Iverson had 15 points and 5 boards, G Wes Eikmeier had 19 points and 4 rebounds, F Greg Smith had 16 points and 6 rebounds and F Pierce Hornung had a double-double with 13 points and a team high 16 rebounds.

Both teams shot relativity the same, Colorado State shot 53.8% on 28 of 52 shooting while Air Force Shot 53.2% on 33 of 62 shooting. A big factor in this game was the free throw situation. Air Force led the game in fouls with 24 while Colorado State gave up only 17. The Rams were 76.5% from the line on 26 of 34 free throw attempts, while the falcons were 58.3% from the line on 7 of 12 free throw attempts.

Both teams are on track to make post season trips, although the Rams are looking up towards the NCAA Tournament while the Falcons are looking at NIT, CBI or CIT.

This could be one wacky day of hoops, and now it is time for some quick predictions:

Colorado State at Air Force: Both teams are playing extremely well, and road wins are hard to come by in this league. Plus, Clune Arena is sold out, so look for Air Force to pull off another upset and get back into NCAA Tournament consideration.

Fresno State at Wyoming: Wyoming wins, that is all I got.

Boise State at New Mexico: If Boise State really wants to see itself as a viable at-large candidate come March they need this win, but the Lobos will be able to take care of this game.

San Diego State at UNLV: This is a tough one, but UNLV is so good at home, so Rebels take this one.

Colorado State and New Mexico are pulling away from the rest of the Mountain West.

The second half of the Mountain West schedule is under way, and through the first game there has already been some wackiness. It started with UNLV falling on the road, again, this time to Air Force, and that loss put UNLV at 5-5 in league play and in fifth place.

The top of the league has begun to separate themselves with New Mexico and Colorado having just two losses, and are two games ahead of San Diego State and Air Force.

However, that could change this weekend when Colorado State travels about an hour southt to face Air Force. Air Force is fresh off a big win over UNLV on Wednesday, and is 11-1 at home.

Other changes could occur when Boise State looks to upset New Mexico on the road, and then San Diego State goes to UNLV.

So before more mayhem occurs here is the current standings:

Road woes for UNLV could have them looking on the outside come NCAA Tournament time.

The UNLV Runnin' Rebels have gone from NCAA Tournament lock to now a team that is in a complete free fall, and possibly out of the NCAA Tournament all together after getting crushed by the Air Force Falcons on Wednesday night, 71-56.

This could be an overstatement from myself since UNLV still has an RPI of 25 and a 17-7 record, and 5-5 in league play, however the Rebels are just 2-5 against teams in the RPI top-50. The two wins came at home game against New Mexico whose, and the other a road win at San Diego State.

Poor road play could be the reason to why UNLV could be on the outside looking in come Selection Sunday. The Rebels have lost five of their last six road games, and overall are 4-6 on the year. The Mountain West is the toughest conference to win on the road out of all of college hoops, but road wins are important for inclusion to the NCAA tournament.

While UNLV has just one high quality win, they have just one poor loss. Their loss on the road to Fresno State is far and away their worst loss, the Bull Dogs have an RPI of 157.

UNLV has enough good games left on the schedule to boost their resume to secure an at-large bid, and of the final six they have four of those at home. In the end UNLV's lofty RPI should allow them to earn an at-large berth, almost regardless of what happens. Plus, they get the Mountain West tournament on their home court, and that should be good for at least one more win, and with the Mountain West being so deep their quarterfinal opponent will be very good.

Currently, UNLV has an average NCAA tournament seeding of 7.28 in the 2013 Bracket Matrix Project, which compiles over 60 bracket projections across the Internet.

Once the season concludes UNLV should be in the NCAA Tournament field, but their seeding is taking a big hit due to the recent losses. Only way UNLV does not make the NCAA tournament is if they fail to earn 20 wins, because that would mean going 2-5 down the stretch and 3-9 over their last 12 games.

Air Force came out to play as they easily defeated UNLV on Wednesday.

The struggles for UNLV continued as they failed to show up as they were routed by Air Force on Wednesday night, 71-56. Playing at Colorado Springs is difficult due to the altitude, plus factor in road games are very difficult to come by in the Mountain West.

In saying that, UNLV was never in this game as Air Force led from 15:05 left in the first half and never looked back. At the end of the first half the Falcons led 43-29, and that was enough for Air Force to win by 15 points.

Air Force was led by Michael Lyons who scored 27 points and Mike Fitzgerald added 18. This win snapped an 11-game losing streak against UNLV. The big issue with UNLV losing this game is that Air Force was going to run their back-door passes, plus the screens and cuts. The Rebels had no answer to the fairly simplistic Falcons offense, but could not stop it.

It was not just the offense where Air Force excelled as they held freshman Anthony Bennett to just eight points, which is 10 points less than his average. Bennett also lost control when he threw the ball at Lyons, and received a technical foul.

Air Force played possibly their best game of year. They out rebounded UNLV by seven, shot 52 percent from the field, held UNLV to 42 percent from the field and made a respectable 8 of 23 shots from three-point range.

The loss probably will not keep UNLV out of the NCAA Tournament, but it will surely cause their seed to take a hit.

Colorado State extends their home winning streak to 27 games, as they defeated San Diego State on Wednesday.

Colorado State made their case for being the best team in the Mountain West as they defeated San Diego State, 66-60 on Wednesday night. The win avenges an earlier season loss that the Rams suffered to the Aztecs, and this win also extends Colorado State's home winning streak > to an amazing 27 games.

This was a tight game overall between the two heavy weight teams, but as time was winding down it wsa Colorado State's guard Dorian Green who hit a clutch three-pointer with a minute left to lift Colorado State to victory. Green also had a game-high 16 points and dished out > six assists.

We had chances - Steve Fisher, San Diego State head coach.

While the three-pointer was huge for Colorado State, the game was won after a Xavier Thames air-ball with 18 seconds left. Green grabbed the rebound with 18 seconds left and drove the other end of the court > and toward Jamaal Franklin under the hoop, then the unexpected happened.

Green ran into Franklin and everyone on teh court expected a charge to be called on Green, but the foul was called on Franklin. San Diego State argued that Franklin was well outside the no-charge zone and an offensive foul should have been called.

Colorado State head coach Larry Eustachy felt a charge call was going to be called:

"I was just waiting for that ref to call a charge and call it off," Eustachy admitted. "It wasn't to be."

San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher did not blame that final call as the reason for the loss:

The Aztecs argued Franklin was well outside the no-charge zone and should have gotten the call. "But officiating is part of what we do," Fisher said. "We had chances."

Green ended up making the first free throw, and on the following miss Greg Smith stole the ball and then saw an open Jon Octeus who sealed the game with a thunderous dunk for the win. This win allows Colorado State to keep with New Mexico in the loss column at two games. New Mexico also won their game Wednesday, as the narrowly defeated Fresno State.

The nationally-ranked New Mexico Lobos finished with three players in double figured and rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to the host Fresno St. Bulldogs for a gritty 54-48 come-from-behind win at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif. Wednesday night.

The win keeps the Lobos, ranked 19th in this week’s AP poll and 18th in the Coaches poll, atop the Mountain West Conference standings with a half-game lead over the Colorado St. Rams. UNM stands at 21-4, 9-2 in MWC play. Fresno falls to 8-15 and 2-8 in league play.

Down 48-45 with 3:40 to play the Lobos finished the game on a 9-0 run. Forward Cameron Bairstow slammed home a dunk that pushed UNM into a 49-48 lead, capping a sequence where the Lobos grabbed five offensive boards to produce four points.

The Lobos defensive effort reached a zenith point in the fine four minutes it had been building to since the beginning of the second half as New Mexico held the Bulldogs scoreless down the stretch and to just one field goal over the game’s final 10:20.

It was quite a turnaround as Fresno St. countered a 16-9 Lobo start with a 14-0 run of their own on their way to 31-20 halftime lead.

There are two big games in the Mountain West on Wednesday night: UNLV at Air Force and San Diego State at Colorado State

This Wednesday night there are four Mountain West games, and as always road teams need to be on their best game. The two big games tonight are UNLV at Air Force and then San Diego State against Colorado State.

UNLV already has road loses to Fresno State and Boise State, however Air Force has one of the better home court advantages and will give UNLV a run for their money.

The other big time game has Colorado State riding a 26-game winning streak on the line against San Diego State. Not only does Colorado State have an extended winning streak, they are ranked for the first time in 59 years.

Now time for some predictions.

UNLV at Air Force: Going with Air Force <strike>upsetting</strike> defending their home court over UNLV, and getting back into the NCAA tournament discussion.

Nevada at Wyoming: This game does not really matter, however lets go with Wyoming winning at home and staying on track for a NIT berth.

New Mexico at Fresno State: Lobos will rebound after losing to UNLV last week and ger the win.

San Diego State at Colorado State: This is tough, but lets go with the hot team at home and go with the Rams getting a big win in front of the 'Orange out' crowd.

Chime in below with your predictions of these games, and discuss the games as they are in progress on Wednesday night.
