We recap the Week 12 Mountain West action, plus the reports of Boise State, BYU and San Diego State looking at rejoining the Mountain West.

Our Week 12 recap podcast gets hijacked by conference realignment, and we spend the last half going through the realignment discussions. It starts with Maryland and Rutgers heading to the Big Ten, and then the trickle down effect to if Boise State and San Diego State still want to go to the Big East.

The big surprise is that BYU has reportedly contacted the Mountain West, along with Boise State and San Diego State, about rejoining the league. We break through all the mess, and discuss the out clauses that Boise State, San Diego State and Houston have regarding the Big East.

Plus, we figure out if Boise State or San Diego State should go to a Big East that now looks like Conference USA from about a decade ago. Because with a diluted Big East, the television money is likely not going to be there in their new deal.

So,enjoy this podcast that is just over an hour as we discuss the pressing Mountain West topics.

Cody Fajardo threw three touchdown passes and gained 319 yards of total offense to lead the Nevada Wolf Pack past the New Mexico Lobos Saturday afternoon in Albuquerque, N.M.

The New Mexico Lobos had another big game on the ground but lack of a passing attack and a late mistake doomed UNM to a 31-24 loss to the visiting Nevada Wolf Pack Saturday afternoon before 17,290 at Branch Field at University Stadium in Albuquerque, N.M.

Cody Fajardo threw three touchdown passes and ran for a career-high 186 yards for the Wolf Pack, which ended a three-game losing streak. New Mexico (4-8, 1-6 Mountain West) finished with 352 yards on the ground but didn’t complete a single pass for the game

"Well you guys saw it - we are what we are and what we are is good enough if we play perfect, but the same things got us beat," said UNM head coach Bob Davie. " Giving up the big plays on defense, you just can't win. I've never been around it where you just can't get it solved, and we just cannot seem to get it solved."

Fajardo, who finished 18 of 27 with one interception, hit receiver Brandon Wimberly on a two-yard TD pass with 4 minutes left in the third quarter for what proved to be the winning score for Nevada (7-4, 4-3).

Trailing 31-24, the Lobos had a chance to tie it late in the fourth quarter after linebacker Dallas Bollema intercepted a Fajardo pass and returned it 37 yards to the Nevada 14 yard line. But on third-and-7 from the 11, UNM’s Crusoe Gongbay fumbled and the Wolf Pack’s Wolf Jordan Hanson recovered with 4:17 left. The Wolf Pack then ran out the clock with four first downs to claim the win.

"Again, right there at the end we had a situation - what is that now? – four Mountain West games that we've had the ball either to win it or tie it on basically the last possession of the game," said Davie. "But as I told the team, we control that. It's giving up big plays on defense. It's a couple of mistakes on offense.

"The last play, you know, the fumble where Cole (Gautsche) is trying to pull it and Crusoe (Gongbay) is trying to pull it and we fumble the ball on the third down," said Davie. "You'd just like to see what would have happened there."

The Lobos (4-8, 1-6), who have lost five straight, got 72 rushing yards and two touchdowns from quarterback Cole Gautsche, but he didn't complete any passes.

In a duel between two of the top running backs in the country, UNM Kasey Carrier out did Nevada’s Stefphon Jefferson, gaining 145 yards on 18 carriers compared to Jefferson’s 128 yards on 23 carries. Jefferson scored one touchdown, a 1-yard run that tied the game at 7-7 in the first quarter.

Fajardo ended up 319 yards of total offense, rushing for 186 yards on 20 carries for the Wolf Pack.

UNM led three times in the first half, it’s last lead coming on a 42-yard field goal by Justus Adams to give the Lobos their last lead at 17-14 with 8 minutes left in the second quarter. But Fajardo drove Nevada to touchdown on their next possession to take a 21-17 halftime lead.

After a Nevada field goal early in the third quarter gave the Wolf Pack a 24-17 lead UNM pulled even with a 2-yard TD run by Jherell Pressley at the 9:55 mark of the third quarter to tie the score at 24-24. But UNM would not score again.

"That’s a really a good offensive team," said Davie. "That's the eighth-ranked offensive team in the country. They're good. They have a good quarterback, good tailback, a good tight end that's about 6-foot-7 and big tall wide receivers. But, same thing. We're giving up big plays and no matter how hard you play, no matter how much effort you give, no matter how much chemistry you have, how much discipline you have, if you don't execute on defense and you give up plays you can't win."

Air Force is heading back to Texas for the Armed Forces Bowl.

The Air Force Falcons have become the first Mountain West team to accept a bowl bid. The Falcons earned an Armed Forces Bowl invite after their 21-7 win over Hawai'i Friday night. This will be the Falcons fourth trip to Fort Worth, Texas, and the hope this time around that the opponent is someone other than the Houston Cougars.

Houston and Air Force have met in the Armed Forces Bowl in the 2008 and 2009 version. The Falcons opponent is still up in the air, but the opponent is to be a team from Conference USA.

The game will be played back on the campus of TCU, and the game is to be played on Dec. 29 on ESPN and kicks off very early at 12:45 p.m. ET, that is a pre-noon local kickoff.

Of course the statement released by the school is a positive one for the football team, as they should be for heading to another bowl game:

"This is a great opportunity for the Air Force Academy and we're very excited to be going back to Fort Worth for the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl," said Air Force director of athletics, Dr. Hans Mueh. "We are very honored to take part in the 10th anniversary of such a prestigious, well-run bowl game."

The Falcons elected to not pass the ball at all in their 21-7 win over Hawaii.

The Air Force Falcons had to win this game against the Hawaii Warriors to become bowl eligible, and while the game was not pretty, the Falcons earned their sixth win to become bowl eligible. The 21-7 victory was not even close to covering the 23-points that Vegas placed on the game.

Air Force had trouble moving the ball early on and trailed 7-0 after Hawaii scored when Clark Evans was on the receiving end of a 26-yard touchdown reception from Jeremy Higgins. That would be the only points that the Warriors would put up all night. Speaking of Higgins, he started in place of Sean Schroeder, and on the night he went 14 of 23 for just 125 yards, Schroeder came in the game late but went 0 for 4 passing.

Air Force finally got on the board midway through the second period when Wes Cobb scored on a 2-yard run to tie the game. The other two scores would come in the third quarter, one by Cobb, and another by Cody Getz.

This was the game that Getz needed to get back on track, and it looked like his ankle was completely healthy, or very close to being so. Getz rushed for 125 yards, his first game over 100 yards since he rushed for 204 yards back on Oct. 4 against Navy.

Overall, this was a sloppy game, and even though Air Force rushed for 338 they barely controlled the time of possession, Air Force won it 31 to 28.

The fun stat of the game is that Air Force elected to not throw the ball at al against Hawai'i. With Hawai'i being as bad as they are against the run, the Falcons decided it was not worth throwing the ball.
