A kicker/punter out of Mission Viejo, California is the 7th recruit from the Golden State to pledge to Boise State’s 2016 football class. Joel Velazquez, 6-0, 220 lbs, gave his pledge Sunday evening to head coach Bryan Harsin before announcing his decision on twitter. That decision followed a visit to the Boise campus two weeks ago. He also made visits to Arizona State, UCLA, Alabama, and Wisconsin, and held offers from several others, including Kent State, Oregon and Cal Poly. But in the end he decided to commit to the Broncos.

At Trabuco Hills High School, his booming leg has led to 32 of his 43 kickoffs being touchbacks, and his punts have averaged 39.3 yards per punt. In addition, Velazquez also had great numbers in the 2015 National Camp Series evaluation kicking camps earlier this year.
Velazquez did a lot of research before committing to the Broncos, noting that he would like to play in the NFL and that Boise State offers him that opportunity. But with a 3.85 GPA and a full scholarship offer, he is also setting his sights on a degree in mechanical engineering.
Velazquez is the 16th known commitment for the Broncos’ 2016 recruiting class.
