How many teams make the field roughly two weeks into Mountain West play?

NCAA Basketball: Mountain West Conference Tournament- San Diego State vs Wyoming Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

We are roughly two weeks into Mountain West play for the 2023-24 college basketball season. Yesterday, we went over a few early takeaways, which you can check out here. Today, let’s examine which Mountain West teams (could) make the NCAA Tournament, if the season ended today! Let’s hop into it!

Colorado State (13-3, 1-2)

NET: 23

KenPom: 28

Lunardi: 6-seed

Bracket Matrix: 56 (out of 57)

Average Bracket Matrix Seed: 5.25

Skinny: Colorado State slipped a bit in its seeding after picking up two consecutive road losses to Boise State and Utah State. It still has five Quad 1-2 wins and places in the top-25 in NET, so its chances for an at-large bid remain safe for now. Its next Quad 1 game will be on Jan. 24 against Nevada, but will first look to snap its skid against Air Force and UNLV this upcoming week.

Nevada (15-1, 2-0)

NET: 30

KenPom: 36

Lunardi: 7-seed

Bracket Matrix: 57

Average Bracket Matrix Seed: 7.4

Skinny: The Wolf Pack moved up four spots from last to this week in the NET, picking up a pair of Quad 4 victories over Fresno State and Air Force by a combined 28 points. It also helps that Indiana State, James Madison and Villanova—three teams that ranked above them last week—all dropped in the NET after picking up losses within the last week. The Wolf Pack will have their first big conference contest Friday against Boise State before traveling to Viejas Arena to take on San Diego State, a place where they’ve lost 10 straight.

New Mexico (13-3, 1-2)

NET: 41

KenPom: 44

Lunardi: ————

Bracket Matrix: 22

Average Bracket Matrix Seed: 11.1

Skinny: Among the five teams listed, New Mexico’s margin-for-error is the thinnest. They’re still the only team listed without a Quad 1 win and own the second-fewest Quad 2 wins (2). There’s plenty of season left. Making the NCAA Tournament is still doable, but they need to stack up key conference wins. Though the proof might already be in the pudding after this two-game home stretch against San Diego State and Utah State, beginning on Saturday.

San Diego State (14-2, 3-0)

NET: 19

KenPom: 21

Lunardi: 4-seed

Bracket Matrix: 57

Average Bracket Matrix Seed: 5.21

Skinny: San Jose State took San Diego State to the wire Tuesday, but the Aztecs were able to earn their seventh straight win. Its last two weeks against SJSU and UNLV were both Quad 3 victories, though five of their next six will be Quad 1. This is an excellent opportunity to pad its resume, which was bolstered this week by Saint Mary’s cracking the top-50 in NET, thus making a previous Quad 2 win into SDSU’s second Quad 1 win of 2023-24.

Utah State (15-1, 3-0)

NET: 18

KenPom: 38

Lunardi: 7-seed

Bracket Matrix: 56

Average Bracket Matrix Seed: 7.55

Skinny: Utah State’s nearly climbed 20 spots in NET in less than two weeks, beginning 3-0 in conference play that included a five-point home win over then-No. 13 Colorado State. They are a MW-best 5-1 in Quad 1-2 games and will have two more opportunities to add to that within the next week, beginning with UNLV on Saturday in Las Vegas, Nev. Utah State has won 14 straight and has been the most surprising MW team this year. They deserve their flowers.
