NIT Bracket projections: Three Mountain West teams make the cut

The NIT could be filled with multiple Mountain West teams.

Each year dives deep into bracket projections beyond the NCAA Tournament with NIT and lower projections. They released their NIT field and it features a trio of Mountain West teams, and possibly a fourth.

Those teams are San Diego State, Boise State, New Mexico and Colorado State is a team that is being considered.

A few things to know about the NIT which could hurt deserving teams. A few years back the tournament decided to allow regular season champion teams to earn a spot in the NIT if they did not get their leagues NCAA Tournament bid. That means there can be shake ups from some of the smaller leagues if their expected champion does not win the conference tournament.

Boise State earns the highest seed from the Mountain West as a No 4 seed and would be hosting an up-and-down BYU team who earned a fifth seed.

New Mexico would be in the same bracket as a six seed and would go on the road to face No. 2 seeded Illinois State out of the MVC. This would be a rematch from the regular season where the Redbirds topped the Lobos at home, 79-74. The Lobos are also considered a bubble team in this NIT field.

Here is this side of the bracket

1. Indiana

8. Colorado

4. Boise St.

5. BYU

3. Utah

6. New Mexico

2. Illinois St.

7. Texas A&M

San Diego State is the other Mountain West team to earn a spot in the NIT field as an eight-seed and would be traveling to face No. 1 seed Arkansas who is currently fourth in the SEC with a record of 18-7.
