NIT Bracketology: Mountain West could get shut out

It is looking possible that the Mountain West might send zero teams to the NIT.

Brian Losness-USA TODAY Sports

The Mountain West could find itself sending one team to the NCAA Tournament and zero to the NIT, and the rest to whatever other lower level tournaments are out there; I heard that there is some Vegas 16 tourney.

Boise State seemed to be a safe bet for the NIT but their quarterfinal loss to Colorado State in the conference tournament now puts them on the outside looking in, according to NYC Buckets latest NIT projections.

Nevada making it to the semifinals definitely did help but they did not have enough in the tank to upset top seeded San Diego State, and they as well are on the NIT bubble.

The title game features San Diego State who with a win go to the Big Dance but a loss are guaranteed a spot in the NIT by way of winning the Mountain West regular season. They are taking on Fresno State after they topped Colorado State, and the win for the Bulldogs now gets them considered as a NIT team in the most recent projections.

This is a sad year for the Mountain West basketball as it is the worst year in the leagues existence and the complete opposite of the year the league earned five teams to the NCAA Tournament.

There might be a few teams that accept a bid to the CBI or CIT, but the NIT could feature zero teams this year.
