San Diego State was favored to beat the San Jose State Spartans at Viejas Arena on Wednesday night, mission accomplished. Jeremy Hemsley led four Aztecs in double figures with 20 points, including the first eight of the game, as the Aztecs turned a two point halftime lead into a 15-point victory, 77-62.

Winston Shepard continued his stellar Mountain West play recording 17 points, five rebounds, and six assists. Freshman Zylan Cheatham set a career high with 17 points on 5-7 shooting from the field and Trey Kell chipped in 10 points.

The Aztecs found themselves in a battle at halftime as the Spartans hung around in the first half. Hemsley hit a three pointer to give the Aztecs a five-point lead, however on the final possession of the half Princeton Onwas (23 points) made a long three pointer to keep the Spartans within one possession.

Early in the second half the Spartans kept within striking distance and took the lead when Ryan Welage (23 points) made a three pointer to put San Jose State up 41-40. San Diego State answered with a 12-0 run and kept the Spartans at bay the rest of the way.

The Aztecs improved to 3-0 in league play. They finished the night shooting 48.1% while holding San Jose State to 36.8%.

Skylar Spencer was once again a force on the boards as he finished with eight rebounds; making it three straight games that he has eight or more rebounds in a game. San Diego State outrebounded San Jose State 31-29.

The Aztecs are now off until next Wednesday when they head to Colorado State to face off against a Rams team that just came off an improbable home victory over UNLV.
