2013-14 college basketball rankings: New Mexico, Boise State getting mentioned

Now that the early entrants for the NBA Draft is in the books there are multiple sites who are updating their latest pre-pre-pre-season top-25 rankings for the 2013-14 season. Boise State and New Mexico are both getting early season respect, well one poll leaves New Mexico out of their top 25.

Sports Illustrated has Boise State at No. 21 and New Mexico is placed at No. 15, and here is what they say about the Lobos:

The team Steve Alford left behind should be better than the one he's inheriting at UCLA, mostly because the Lobos bring back an elite inside-outside combination in center Alex Kirk and point guard Kendall Williams. Kirk's 7-foot presence in the paint was a key reason why New Mexico ranked seventh nationally in two-point field-goal D last season, and Williams is much, much more talented than the version of him you saw against Harvard in the NCAA tournament.

He and Boise State's Derrick Marks figure to be the best floor generals in the Mountain West, where the Broncos need to be regarded as a serious sleeper candidate to win the league.

Then there is CBS Sports who put out a top-26 rankings and while they do have Boise State ranked No. 23 there is no sign of New Mexico.

This is extremely odd since they only lose Tony Snell to the draft, and while Steve Alford left for UCLA it is widely known that new head coach Craig Neal was the key to the offensive success. Also, the Lobos are the favorite to repeat as Mountain West champions from those who cover the league, so it is a complete mystery to why New Mexico is omitted by the CBS Sports crew.
