The Mountain West announced on Friday that the league will continue to play the men's and women's basketball tournament through 2016 at the Thomas and Mack Center on the campus of UNLV:
"The Mountain West Basketball Championships and Las Vegas have proven to be a winning combination for more than 10 years," said Pat Christenson, president of Las Vegas Events. "Our organization is committed to showcasing Las Vegas through world-class events, and this tournament has proven to be a great attraction for basketball fans throughout the country. Las Vegas has been a partner of the Mountain West since its inception, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with this premier conference for many years to come."
This makes perfect sense to keep the conference tournament in a fun, and easy to get to location which is Las Vegas. The few years the tournament was at the Pepsi Center in Denver were a complete joke since the arena had very little fans, while the games in Las Vegas have been great crowds.
The only change that probably should be considered is to move it away from the home court of UNLV. The advantage is just to great and yes UNLV has not won the conference tournament since 2008 and have not won the title since 2010.
However, the Pac-12 is hosting their conference tournament at the MGM Grand and the WCC and WAC are playing in Las Vegas at places other than the Thomas and Mack Center. That is the only thing that should change for the tournament, just find a different location.
