Mountain West basketball standings: Top of the league is tight

New Mexico and Colorado State are sitting at the top of the latest Mountain West standings with just two loses.

USA TODAY Sports

The latest Mountain West standings took an unexpected turn when UNLV upset New Mexico this past weekend. Despite the loss, New Mexico is still at the top of the league, they are a half-game ahead of Colorado State, and they each have two league losses. San Diego State rounds out the top three with a 6-3 league record.

The big game this Wednesday is when San Diego State travels to Colorado State. The winner will be in second place, but it will be very difficult for the Aztecs to defeat the Rams at Moby Arena. Colorado State is currently riding a 26-game home winning streak.

UNLV and Air Force are also in a key game that could make or break one of the team's NCAA tournament at-large berth. Air Force has more to lose than UNLV, but with the Rebels playing so poorly they can not afford to lose this difficult road game.
