Propelled by Spencer Thorton, Danny Sheehan and Seby Zavala, San Diego State defeated New Mexico, 6-4, in the 2015 Mountain West Conference Championship game on Sunday. The win gives the Aztecs their third straight tournament title and clinches the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Zavala, who was named the tournament MVP, went 2 for 3 scoring a run and driving in a run. Danny Sheehan went 2 for 4 driving in two runs and Spencer Thorton went 2 for 4, as well. For the Lobos, Jack Zoellner went 2 for 3 as he brought in all three of New Mexico's earned runs today and kept the Lobos in the game.
The Aztecs scored first when Spencer Thorton hit an RBI single to score Steven Pallares, who led off with a single and advanced the to third base after a pair of back to back ground outs. New Mexico took the lead at the top of the second inning when Zoellner hit a two run home run making it 2-1 Lobos. The Aztecs reclaimed the lead when Thorton hit a RBI single to score Zavala.
After Ty France hit a double to start the bottom of the fifth inning, Zavala brought him home with a single to make it 3-2 Aztecs. The Lobos then tied the game when Zoellner hit a double to bring home Carl Stajduhar and after that, the Lobos took a 4-3 lead when Zoellner scored off a double play ground ball.
The Aztecs tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth when with runners on first and second base, Steven Pallares was grounded out in the infield but a run was scored. Then, Sheehan's hit a double down the left field line scoring another run giving the Aztecs the lead for good at 5-4. The Aztecs scored another run in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it 6-4.
The Aztecs will now head back to San Diego with their conference title in hand and see what NCAA regional site they will be assigned to (UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Fullerton?). The announcement of their regional assignment will be on Monday at 9 am PST on ESPN.
