Fresno State's undefeated and BCS chances are over as they were upset by San Jose State in an offensive shootout, 62-52 Friday evening. This game started fast and furious from the start and at the end of the first quarter it was 27-21 at the end of the first quarter, and 42-41 at the end of the half, both in favor of San Jose State.
The Spartans were 5--6 and needed this game to earn one of the six Mountain West bowl bid. The game by the San Jose State offense was their best by far of the year, and quarterback David Fales and Derek Carr put on an extreme show as both quarterback combined for 12 touchdown passes and over 1,000 yards in the air.
The game started off with each teams going back and forth and Fresno State took a six-point lead after San Jose State's Chandler Jones fumbled the ball at midfield, and Fresno State scored four plays later. The teams again went score-for-score with San Jose State taking a 28-27 lead at the half.
San Jose State made some defensive adjustments in the second half -- as well as going on long extensive drives -- to held Fresno State in check. The Spartans went on a 23-3 in the third and fourth quarter. Fresno State did score a touchdown and a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late.
Fresno State never had the chance to come back with just four possessions in the second half; one was a three-and-out and the other saw Carr throw an interception which turned into a San Jose State field goal.
The Spartans win showed the flaw in the Bulldogs secondary which everyone knew existed, but it took an NFL caliber quarterback in Fales to exploit that. Fresno State still goes on to host the Mountain West title game next week but their BCS hopes are 99 percent over, if not more.
