LAST MEETING: 2012 in Laramie, WY – Wyo 31, UNM 10

WHAT ABOUT WYOMING: The Cowboys are on the up after beating arch rivals Colorado State 45-31 in Laramie last week to end a four game losing streak and claim their first win of the season. Wyoming and New Mexico have split the last six meetings, each team winning 3 games. Before that UNM has won six games in a row. Since moving over from the WAC to the Mountain West, UNM has reversed its fortunes against the Cowboys, winning nine of 13 meetings in the new league. Wyoming has not won in Albuquerque since 2006.

A year after an 8-5 season and a berth in the New Mexico Bowl, the Cowboys have swiftly come back to earth and were winless in MWC play until last week’s win over CSU. Wyoming enters the game ranked 84 th in Total Offense, averaging 374.33 yards per game. UW’s strength is passing – they rate 54tht in the nation averaging 237.67 ypg, which could be trouble for the Lobos battered and depleted defensive backfield. The ‘Boys are 89th in the Rushing Offense nationally averaging 136.67 ypg.

Like UNLV last week, UW’s defense is weak where the Lobos have been strong, coming in 100th in rushing offense, allowing 203.78 yards per game, and 84th in Total Defense, allowing 374.33 yards per game.

ON OFFENSE: Quarterback Brett Smith is ranked 28th nationally averaging 285.14 of Total Offense a game and 33rd in the nation in passing efficiency with a rating of 147.32. He has 1,791 passing yards in the season. Runing backs Shaun Wick and D.J. May lead the Cowboys in rushing with averages of 37 ypg and 32.38 ypg respectively. Chris McNeil is UW’s top receiver, tied for 50th in the nation with 5.56 catches per game, averaging 62.67 yards per game.

ON DEFENSE: Korey Jones leads Wyoming averaging 9 tackles on the year, placing him 49th in the nation. Ghaali Muhammad leads the Cowboys averages 8.67 tackles a game while averaging 1 tackle for a loss per game.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Punter Tim Gleeson is ranked 24th in the nation with an average of 42.85 yards per punt while Blair Burns is ranked 27th in the nation, averaging 10.17 yards per return.

NOTES: Wyoming and New Mexico will be playing for the 65th time in the two schools’ histories this Saturday. It is the fourth oldest rivalry for the Cowboys behind only Colorado State (104 meetings), Utah (83) and BYU (77).

  • The Cowboys will be looking for their first road win over the Lobos since capturing a 14-10 victory in Albuquerque on Oct. 7, 2006.
  • UW will also be looking for back-to-back wins for the first time this season, having defeated Colorado State last week in Laramie, 45-31.
  • New Mexico will be trying to break a three-game losing streak this season. The Lobos lost at UNLV last week (7-35), lost at home to Fresno State (32-49) the week prior and lost on the road at Air Force (23-28) three weeks ago.
