In the 14 years since the New Mexico Lobos have visited the Hawai’i Warriors (then known as the Rainbow Warriors). Then UH was in the midst of a losing season against a team on its way up with a coach in his final season against a new coach for UNM. A little has changed. This time around the Warriors and the Lobos both have first year coaches but the positions are identical – Hawai’i is in the midst of a losing season at 1-4 while New Mexico is 3-3 with an eye on its first winning season in 5 years.

THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT – HAWAI’I: First year head coach Norm Chowhas ditched the spread offense that the Warriors used so well in recent years for a pro-style offense. As a result UH is struggling, currently rated No. 118 out of 120 FBS schools in total offense, 116th in scoring (20.4 points) and 116th in third-down conversion.

The good news for the Warriors is that UNM’s defense is rated just a shade higher (No. 86 allowing an average of 425.7 yards per game ) than UH’s D, which stands at No. 87.

The run-averse Hawaii D now faces the 8th best rushing offense in America in UNM, a team that averages 271.7 yards per game. Hawaii gave up 194 yards on the ground to San Diego State in a 52-14 loss to the Aztecs last week, 355 rushing yards to Nevada and 396 to Brigham Young.

ON OFFENSE: Junior quarterback Sean Schroeder has completed 87-of-157 passing for 812 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions on the year. Freshman Will Gregory leads the team with 351 yards of rushing and two touchdowns, averging 4.7 yards per carry this season. and sophomore Joey Iosefa.

ON DEFENSE: Senior safety Jason McLean leads the Bobcats defense in tackles with 34 this season. Sophomore cornerback Craig Mager, fourth on the team with 20 tackles, leads the team with two interceptions.

NOTES: Saturday’s game against New Mexico is homecoming for Hawai’i.

• UH has won its last 10 Homecoming games and 12 of its last 13 and boasts a 37-24-1 all-time record in Homecoming games since 1949.
• UH leads the all-time series with New Mexico 14-7, including a 11-4 advantage in Honolulu. The Lobos have won the last four games in the series, including the last meeting in 1998 (30-20), held at Aloha Stadium.
• The Warriors have lost their last three conference home games dating back to last season and last five conference games overall.
• The last time UH started a season 1-4 was in 2005, when it finished the regular season 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the Western Athletic Conference.
