It’s Monday, football season is over in the Moutain West, but college basketball is up and running. Through it all, the content keeps going. Check out our original coverage and what we can find from the World Wide Web below.

Embrace the transfer portal.

The transfer portal has a ton of drawbacks, and it isn’t always the most well-thought-out choice, but that doesn’t mean there are no benefits either. It’s nice that players have better options than they used to, and they certainly have power for the first time in the history of the sport. It’s not fun to lose talented players, but it also creates a big opportunity to improve the roster. Developing a sound philosophy around the transfer portal is imperative in this day and age.

Transfer portal fixes?

However, it doesn’t mean there can not be some tweaks to enhance the transfer portal. Nick Carparelli, the executive director of Bowl Season, identifies three solutions to help bowl season and transfers. Those three are: eliminate the early signing day peirod, eliminate the fall transfer portal window and, the one that is probably most impactful to him, allow bowls to compensate players for participation. Bowls already provide payouts, so giving a cut to players is easy enough. The other ones will likely take more thought, but are probably due for some changes after being in place for a few seasons. Time will tell.

Lobo assistant info.

New football coach Bronco Mendenhall is faced with a difficult task to improve the Lobo program. The assistant pool won’t make it any easier. His 10 assistants will make a combined $1.8 million, which will be a bit less than what the pool was this past football season. The 2 coordinators will each make $400K, which is good money in the G5 world. However, the 7 of the other 8 assistants are making either $100K or $125K, which is well below the competitive going rate. While it may not keep New Mexico from getting good young coaches, it make impact their ability to keep them.

Are the Broncos loading up for a playoff run?

Championships, and now playoff appearances, are not won in January. Well actually they are, but not the Janauary a year in advance. However, putting the pieces together is a good goal for the offseason. The Broncos were a flawed team last year, but are attempting to address those needs in the transfer portal. Getting one of the top QB from the 2023 class, plus proven playmakers at wide receiver, defensive back, and edge are doing a lot to shore up their shortcomings, at least on paper. Every G5 team is gearing up for that playoff spot and Boise State should be on the shortlist heading into the season. Of course, they still have to win the game.

Aggies topple Rams, make a statement.
