Football may be over for the season, but there is plenty of football news with the transfer portal and coaching news as we lead up to the second signing day in February. Also, conference basketball games are starting this week. Through it all, we have you covered. Take a look at today’s links, plus the content coming your way on our site.

Will the conference send at least four teams to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season? It’s looking like it at this point in the season. Kevin Lytle tries to separate the serious teams from the one who are more fool’s good at this point. For the contenders, he lists Colorado State, Nevada, New Mexico, SDSU, and Utah State. The Pretenders are Air Force, Fresno State, SJSU, UNLV, and Wyoming. As for Boise State, he labels them a lurking contender and says they need to have a strong showing in conference play, but are definitely capable of doing so.

For Rebels, the transfer portal gives more than it takes.

The news about Jayden Maiava transferring was quite the blow to UNLV. For starters, he emerged as a great fit for their system and even won the MW Freshman of the Year. Also, he said just about a week ago that he was coming back, so the Rebels thought they were spared from this. However, many of the skill players and key defensive pieces, like linebacker Jackson Woodward, were transfers themselves. It is clear UNLV benefitted from the use of the transfer portal to build a championship-caliber team, and they can find a QB again this year.

Aggie finding his footing.

Ian Martinez wanted to start playing with the rest of his teammates back in November, but instead, he had to wait on the NCAA. He was working hard on the scout team to help his teammates but was obviously getting discouraged. Finally, the NCAA ruled he and other double transfers could play and a weight was lifted off his shoulders. After five games coming off the bench, Martinez has found his way into the starting lineup and continues to produce, becoming the team’s second leading-scorer.
