UNLV is going to it’s first bowl game in almost 10 years and will only be the fifth bowl they have reached all-time. The Rebels have a 3-1 record in the previous games with their last one being the only loss. It was to North Texas in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Their last win was in the Las Vegas Bowl against Arkansas back in the year 2000.
Coach Barry Odom, in his first year as head honcho, has turned this program around. After years of finishing with inadequate records, Coach Odom brought a winning mentality back to Vegas. They played their opponents very tough all year, even if they did not come out victorious.
UNLV comes into this game coming off of two losses to end the regular season to San Jose State then Boise State in the Mountain West Championship. After some transfer portal rumors that turned out to be false, the Rebels will have their squad back for the bowl game against the Kansas Jayhawks.
QB Jayden Maiava was one to be rumored to be hitting the transfer portal, but he is staying for now. After winning Mountain West Freshman of the Year, he will be looking to lead his team to their first bowl win since before he was born. His favorite target WR Ricky White, who broke the single-season UNLV receiving record this year, should continue to shine in this game to keep building his resume for his future in football. With these two offensive weapons the Rebels should be in good shape against the Big 12 opponent. The Rebels will also have a very good ground game to complement the passing attack. And last, but certainly not least, record-smashing Groza Award finalist and Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Year K Jose Pizano will be there to put the ball through the uprights.
On the defensive side on the ball, Coach Odom and Defensive Coordinator Mike Scherer have got this defense making big plays. Even though they have given up a lot of points this year, they have come up with key plays in the most important parts of the game. If they can keep the Jayhawks to a minimum amount of points, the Rebel offense should be able to score the right amount to get the win. However, this is no easy task as one of the key wins this Kansas team has had is against Oklahoma earlier this season.
