Mountain West Players of the Week: Week Eight

As we inch closer to the end of the season, surprise performers continue to emerge.

NCAA Football: Colorado State at UNLV Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

Week eight of the season has concluded. Nine Mountain West teams were in action, while three teams had a bye. There weren’t as many standout performances on the offensive side of the ball as there have been in recent weeks. But there were some dynamite performances on defense and special teams. Let’s look at the top performers from this past weekend.

Offensive Player of the Week

Jayden Maiava (UNLV)

The freshman quarterback had a great second half and let a spectacular, game-winning drive in UNLV’s come-from-behhind victory over Colorado State. Maiava finished the game completing 27 of 36 passes for 353 yards.

Defensive Player of the Week

Alec Mock (Air Force)

The senior linebacker had a pick six that essentially sealed the game for the Falcons. Mock also added seven tackles, leading the Falcons to a big win over their rival, Navy.

Special Teams Player of the Week

Jose Pizano (UNLV)

The Rebels kicker set a new team record completing all six of his field goal attempts. Pizano was spot on in all of his attempts, including his game winner as time expired.

Freshman of the Week

Dereck Moore (New Mexico)

The freshman safety had a nice day for the Lobos in their victory over Hawaii. Moore finished the day with seven tackles in New Mexico’s 42-21 victory.
