The Mountain West Conference 2021 Strength of Schedule.

New, 2 comments

Sports Betting Dime released a SOS for all 130 FBS teams. Where do the MWC teams rank?

Colorado State vs Wyoming

Our friends at SportsBettingDime are at it again. This time with Strength of Schedule ratings.

The proprietary @SBD Strength of Schedule formula is based upon their opponents’ efficiency ratings from last season minus the production lost from the 2020 team; recruiting rankings; major transfers added and lost. The formula is then adjusted for each game based upon home and road games. As a point of reference, the toughest possible schedule would score 397.09, making Arkansas’ SOS 31.82% of the hardest possible schedule. The easiest hypothetical schedule against all FBS opponents would score -471.94 making UTEP’s SOS (171.68) 36.38% of the easiest schedule.

We pulled the MWC Teams out for convenience but the complete list is below.

Colorado State (76)

UNLV (80)

Boise State (87)

Fresno State (92)

Utah State (107)

New Mexico (108)

Wyoming (111)

San Diego State (115)

Nevada (122)

Air Force (124)

San Jose State (125)

Hawaii (129)

A few thoughts here:

  • With teams like SJSU and Nevada returning so much production and having easy schedules, can they repeat or even improve on their seasons from last year?
  • Boise State may be in the opposite boat, as they lost a moderate amount of production and have a difficult schedule, at least among MWC teams.
  • For a team like UNLV, who struggled last year, and maybe even Colorado State, the road does not get easier this year to climb the win column.

For those curious, here’s a look at the strength-of-schedule for all 130 FBS teams. For additional odds and analysis, visit https://www.sportsbettingdime.com/guides/resources/ncaaf-strength-schedule-rankings/
