We have reached day three of our “Tip-Off Week” here at MWCConnection as we get ready for the upcoming men’s basketball season. On day one, we revealed our predicted order of finish, and yesterday we released our All-MWC Preseason team.

Today, we are releasing our preseason picks for preseason awards, including Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, and more. Our staff voted in our poll with who they thought was the best player for each award. The votes were then tallied up and the player with the most votes was picked for their specific award. Here are our votes for preseason awards:

Player of the Year:

  • Grant Sherfield

Defensive Player of the Year:

  • David Roddy

Coach of the Year:

  • Niko Medved

Sixth Man of the Year:

  • Max Rice

Freshman of the Year:

  • Keshon Gilbert and Jalen Weaver (Tie)

Newcomer of the Year:

  • Matt Bradley and Donovan Williams (Tie)

Best Position Units

Best Offense:

  • Nevada

Best Defense:

  • San Diego State

Best Bench:

  • San Diego State

  • Sherfield, Roddy, and Rice were all unanimous selections for their awards.
  • Brian Dutcher was the only other coach selected as “Coach of the Year.”
  • There was a tie in both “Freshman of the Year” and “Newcomer of the Year,” both Gilbert and Weaver for Freshman of the Year, and Bradley and Williams for Newcomer of the Year.
  • San Diego State was unanimously selected as both “Best Defense and Best Bench.”
  • Colorado State was the only other team to receive any votes in “Best Offense.”

Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below on our picks. Did we miss anyone? Was there anyone else we should have considered for any of these spots?
