Mountain West Fan Guide: Week 8

Last week we saw Nevada and San Diego State position themselves as the top teams in the West Division, while Colorado State, Utah State, and Air Force are vying for the top spot in the Mountain Division. As you settle in to watch week eight games, here is how fans of each team should be approaching who they root for this weekend. (I have eliminated New Mexico and UNLV this week).

Air Force

Win out and hope Utah State drops another game. Even after beating Boise State, the Falcons aren’t in the drivers seat. They should be pulling for Colorado State to beat Utah State and New Mexico to beat Wyoming.

Boise State

The Broncos are on a bye this weekend, but the loss to Air Force has given them only a slight chance to win the division. The Broncos need some help from West Division foe San Diego State who takes on Air Force. Colorado State-Utah State helps Boise State regardless of who wins the game. The Broncos would also benefit from New Mexico upsetting Wyoming.

Colorado State

It feels a little weird to say this, but the Rams are in the drivers seat for the division. This weekend’s match up against Utah State is huge. If the Rams win and Air Force loses to San Diego State, they will have a two game lead in the Mountain. But the schedule for the Rams gets tougher going forward.

Utah State

With Boise State’s loss to Air Force, the Aggies are now in a scenario where they control their own destiny. Friday’s game against Colorado State has huge implications for both teams. Win and the possibility of representing the Mountain in the championship game becomes very real. If the Aggies win and Air Force loses to San Diego State, it will give them some room for error. Utah State would also benefit from New Mexico defeating Wyoming.

Wyoming

An 0-2 start has left the Cowboys reeling. But they still have a very slight chance if they can figure things out. They should be pulling for Utah State over Colorado State and San Diego State over Air Force.

Fresno State

The Bulldogs really can’t afford another loss to a division opponent. If they lose this weekend, they are likely out of the title hunt. If the Bulldogs can beat Nevada, they should be pulling for Air Force over San Diego State and UNLV over San Jose State.

Hawaii

Hawaii plays New Mexico State...AGAIN. They should be pulling for Fresno State to beat Nevada and Air Force to beat San Diego State. A San Jose State loss to UNLV would also help.

Nevada

Beat Fresno State and hope Air Force beats San Diego State. If Nevada wins this weekend, the division race will likely come down to the Wolf Pack and Aztecs.

San Jose State

Another loss will probably eliminate the Spartans. They will need to play flawless football the rest of the year. They need to beat UNLV. A Nevada loss to Fresno State would help, as would San Diego State losing to Air Force.

San Diego State

The Nevada-Fresno State game is a win-win situation for the Aztecs. But they probably benefit more from Fresno State winning. The Aztecs also need to win a tough contest against Air Force this weekend.
