After riding the high of beating the number ten team in the nation in BYU, the Broncos were back to making foolish errors. Boise State was plagued by penalties, coaching errors, and an overall lack of discipline. These errors aren’t what we are accustomed to seeing from a Bronco team that relies on discipline. Boise State is now 1-3 at home and 3-4 overall. It is the worst home perforce this millennium and the agitation in Bronco nation is growing larger. Let’s take a look at how each unit performed.
Offensive Grade: F
After the first drive, it looked like the Broncos would be able to move the ball with relative ease. Boise State scored touchdowns on two of its first three possessions and the Broncos were even getting some push in the run game.
Boise State only managed three points in the second half and blew an opportunity to tie the game late in the third quarter. The Broncos had only ten players on the field for a critical 4th and goal that could have changed the momentum of the game. It is the basic errors that continue to haunt this Boise State squad.
Defensive Grade: C
It was the tale of two halves once again. The Boise State defense was able to make adjustments after a poor first half where Air Force dominated time of possession. The Falcons didn’t have a lot of huge plays, but they consistently grinded out five and six yards runs to keep the Bronco defense on the field. WIth that being said, the Bronco defense did enough to win this game. The same can’t be said for the offense.
Special Teams Grade: A
Special teams play was solid. The Broncos made their lone field goal attempt and Joel Velazquez nailed a late onside kick and was solid in the punt game. This unit put the team in a position to be successful.
Coaching: F
The Broncos have not had a game where both units looked ready from the start. This young coaching staff has had to do a lot of learning on the job. The fans are already calling for many coaches to be fired. I’m not there yet, but some of these assistants really need to find their footing or they could be looking for a new gig next year.
This Boise State squad continues to leave fans perplexed. The offense disappears in the second half and the defense continues to struggle against the run. A championship season is unlikely, is it possible that the Broncos could even be left home during bowl season? What were your thoughts on Boise State’s performance?
