As we reach the halfway point of the season, each Mountain West school should be scoreboard watching. Every week, we will look at each team that is still eligible to play in the Mountain West championship game and scenarios that fit the best interests of that team. With every team still being eligible for the championship game, we will be looking at what each team needs to happen.
Air Force
Air Force can put themselves in a good position with a win over Boise State this weekend. However, they will need Utah State to drop another game at some point. The Falcons could also benefit from New Mexico beating Colorado State, Fresno State beating Wyoming, and UNLV defeating Utah State.
Boise State
They may have lost to Nevada, but if the Broncos can beat Air Force this weekend they will be the favorites to win the division. Boise State fans should also be rooting for Fresno State, UNLV, and New Mexico this weekend.
Colorado State
Look out, the Rams are in first place in the Mountain Division! It will stay that way this weekend with a win over New Mexico. They could widen the gap with Wyoming and Utah State if they both lose.
New Mexico
New Mexico is the only team in the conference that has two losses, and they have a tough test against an improving Colorado State squad. For the Lobos it all comes down to winning. They could also get some help with Wyoming and Utah State losing.
Utah State
The Aggies have an excellent chance to build some momentum this weekend after suffering two consecutive losses. If they take care of business against the Rebels, they will be pulling for Air Force over Boise State, Fresno State over Wyoming, and New Mexico over Colorado State.
Wyoming
The Cowboys have their hands full with Fresno State this weekend. A win here would be huge. They should also be rooting for Boise State to beat Air Force, UNLV to beat Utah State, New Mexico to beat Colorado State.
Fresno State
The Bulldogs no longer control their own destiny. They need Hawaii to lose to Nevada and will need to beat Nevada when they face off next week. In the meantime, it would be helpful if San Diego State and UNLV lost.
Hawaii
The Rainbow Warriors scored a huge victory over Fresno State two weeks ago, but the loss to San Jose still stings. They should be rooting for the Aztecs to beat the Spartans (in this scenario Hawaii would need to beat SDSU down the road). Fresno State and UNLV losing would also help Hawaii.
Nevada
The Wolf Pack have as much momentum as any team in the conference, but Hawaii has been an issue for them in years past. If the Wolf Pack win this weekend and the Aztecs lose, they will be in sole possession of first place. It would also help if Fresno State and UNLV lose.
San Diego State
The Aztecs still control their own destiny. But they definitely have a few games they should be keeping an eye on. It all starts on Friday night; they need to beat San Jose State. They also should be rooting for Wyoming to beat Fresno State, Hawaii to beat Nevada, and Utah State to beat UNLV.
San Jose State
The Spartans are in trouble. They are a different team without Starkell at the helm. But they can really change things with a victory over San Diego State on Friday. If they lose, they will have the slimmest of shots to make it to the conference championship game. They should also be rooting for Wyoming, Hawaii (who they beat), and Utah State.
UNLV
The Rebels may be 0-5, but the good news is that they have only played one conference game. They host Mountain Division foe Utah State this weekend and are heavy underdogs. They need to win this weekend and hope Nevada, Fresno State, and San Diego State lose.
