The Good, the Bad, the Ugly: What Might Have Been

Last Tuesday we received some heartbreaking news; the Mountain West football season will be postponed until the spring (hopefully). With that came the cancellation of out-of-conference games, a million questions in regard to players that want to enter the draft, and a plethora of eligibility questions. With that being said, this edition of “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly” will be focusing on what might have been if we had a fall football season.

The Good:

Boise State Beats Florida State on the Blue

Florida State was arguably the biggest opponent to ever travel to Boise. The game was likely going to be the game of the week on Fox, and it sounded like their morning show crew was planning on broadcasting from Albertsons Stadium. Boise State had an excellent chance to beat a major name at home, and this game alone would have been enough to sell out season tickets and likely break attendance records. This is a huge loss for the Bronco program.

Wyoming and Boise State have Great Seasons

The Mountain Division once again has the strongest teams in the conference. An epic showdown in Laramie proves to be an early qualifier for the Mountain West Championship Game. The game comes down to the final minutes; Boise State pulls out a narrow victory which leads to a fourth consecutive Mountain West Championship. Both teams exceed expectations and finish the season with double digit wins.

The West Comes Down to the Final Week

The West was sure to be a competitive division this fall. Last year, it came down to a late season showdown between Hawaii and San Diego State. Nevada and SDSU were the favorites, but the Bulldogs were an intriguing, surprise pick for me. The Bulldogs were going to give the Aztecs all they could handle.

The Bad:

The Mountain West Misses Out..Again

Last year, a 12-1 Boise State narrowly missed out on a Cotton Bowl bid. The same thing was going to happen this year. Boise State was going to drop another game it had no business losing (see 2019 BYU) which would cost them a spot in a major bowl game.

The Ugly:

After a Solid 2019 OOC Showing, the Mountain West Takes a Step Back

Wyoming and Boise State come away with significant wins over Utah and Florida State, but the rest of the conference doesn’t quite meet the task. After a great 2019 OOC showing, the Mountain West finishes the 2020 season with a losing record against Power 5 competition.
