2020 Football Look Ahead: Conference Play

What will happen in conference play in the MWC this fall?

NCAA Football: Colorado State at Fresno State Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

Conference play is vital every year in determining who will win their respective divisions and get to advance to the MWC Championship game. However, this article is not about picking division winners. At this time, I want to focus on possible trends in conference play based on the 2019 results rather than pick through every conference team.

Let’s take a look at some of the 2019 results from conference play:

  1. Boise State went 8-0, running the table in conference play. This was the first time since 2015 (San Diego State) that a Mountain West team went unbeaten in conference play.
  2. New Mexico went 0-8, finishing win-less in conference play. This was the first time since 2016 (Fresno State) that a Mountain West team went win-less in conference play.
  3. The Mountain Division was 28-20 in conference play. That means that the West Division was 20-28 in conference play. In 2018, the two divisions were perfectly even at 24-24. The last time that the Mountain Division (22-26) had a losing record in conference play versus the West Division (26-22) was 2013.

So here are this weeks questions for you:
