Unanswered Questions - #1 Aztecs Season Ranking

Did San Diego State Just Have Their Best Basketball Season Ever?

NCAA Basketball: Mountain West Conference Tournament- Boise State vs San Diego State Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

Well, we find ourselves in a completely different world than a month ago. Spring sports were abruptly cancelled across the country to try and stop the spread of COVID-19 as we stopped large gatherings and started practicing social distancing. Just focusing on the impact to collegiate sports, we are left with some unanswered questions because of the sudden sports halt.

As such, this article (one of potentially several) looks to discuss some of these unanswered questions and get your take (via a poll at the bottom of the article) on the sports questions that will have to go unanswered on some level since so many sporting events were cancelled.

Question #1 - Did San Diego State Just Have Their Best Basketball Season Ever?

The San Diego State Aztecs men’s basketball team just finished the 2019/20 basketball season with an amazing record of 30-2. The Aztecs were a likely #2 seed for the NCAA tournament field. Had that come to fruition it would have been just the second time (2011) that the Aztecs were a #2 seed in the tournament. The Aztecs were 26-0 at one point this season, ranking as high as the #4 team in the country. The only losses for the Aztecs were a 3-point loss to UNLV late in the season that ended the chance of a perfect regular season and another 3-point loss to Utah State in the Mountain West Tournament Championship Game.

Unfortunately, this team did not get to finish their season with a run in the NCAA Tournament, so we don’t know how they would have fared.

We do know that the Aztecs have made the Sweet Sixteen twice in the past.

Once in 2011. That 2010/11 season saw the Aztecs finish 34-3 with a loss in the Sweet Sixteen to Connecticut. That Connecticut team went on to win the National Championship. The 2010/11 Aztecs only other losses were to BYU (lost twice in the regular season). Those were the Jimmer Fredette BYU teams that were pretty good in their own right as that BYU team also went on to lose in the Sweet Sixteen in 2011.

The other time the Aztecs made the Sweet Sixteen was in 2014. The 2013/14 Aztecs went 31-5, losing to Arizona in the Sweet Sixteen.

Prior to this season, those were probably the two best seasons in the history of men’s basketball for the Aztecs.

So, where does this past (seemingly still unfinished) season now rank?

I’d probably say the 2010/11 team ranks #1 since that was a pretty special year where the only losses were to very good teams. I’d rank the 2019/20 season #2 for the great start to the season and only losing 2 games all year. Lastly, I’d rank the 2013/14 season #3.

That said, what do you think?
