Mountain West Bowl Projections: Week Seven

Heading into the final bowl projections, there is still plenty of uncertainty

NCAA Football: Boise State at Air Force Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

We are heading into the final week of the regular season and it still looks like the Mountain West might have as many as five bowl tie-ins. With the dates of the bowl games, it is almost certain that the participants of the championship game will be playing in Los Angeles and Arizona. Here is how our team thinks things will play out.

(Projections were completed before the cancellation of the LA Bowl was announced)

Zach:

Los Angeles Bowl: Boise State

New Mexico Bowl: Fresno State

Potato Bowl: Nevada

Arizona Bowl: San Jose State

Frisco Bowl: N/A

I am sticking with four bowl teams. But I am not confident that the Mountain West will have a bowl season. It is hard to see the Los Angeles Bowl happening, but I am sticking with what we know at this point. I am not as confident in Boise State as I was a few weeks ago.We have absolutely no idea what their roster looks like at this point or if they will even be able to play.

Four bowl teams seems like a good bet right now considering a number of bowl games have already been canceled and there is bound to be more cancellations to come. Boise State has pretty much clinched a spot in the Mountain West title and San Jose State can do the same next week with a win against Nevada. If the Wolf Pack beat the Spartans then Boise State would get in over San Jose State. The loser of the San Jose State vs Nevada game will likely go to the New Mexico Bowl (relocated to Texas this year) while the loser of the Mountain West title game should be playing a MAC team in the Arizona bowl. Fresno State is essentially eliminated from championship contention after the loss to Nevada so they would have the Potato bowl spot. Obviously the prime spot would be the Los Angeles bowl against a PAC-12 opponent but that spot is reserved for the Mountain West champion should said champion not be playing in the New Years Six or Playoffs. The Frisco bowl is another bowl game that the Mountain West has an affiliation with so if the Los Angeles bowl were to be canceled, it is possible that the Mountain West champion goes to the Frisco bowl to face off against an AAC or C-USA opponent. The Mountain West could also find itself putting a team in the Cheez-It bowl if there isn’t enough bowl eligible Big-10 or Big 12 teams, but the conference serves as an alternate so maybe this doesn’t happen. Truth is, a lot is up in the air when looking at bowl season but things should become more clear in two weeks when bowl eligible teams are placed.

I’m going four bowl teams, with Fresno State being the fourth. San Diego State just doesn’t look like a great team to me anymore. The other three are all but locks although the order is anyone’s guess at this point. I still think Boise State ends up going to the LA Bowl, with SJSU taking the second slot in Arizona. Nevada, for as well as they’ve played, will get to travel to Texas for the New Mexico bowl. One of those teams, and really both, should be able to test their strength by going up against a Power 5 team to end the year, and with all the odd scenarios playing out, hopefully they will.

Arizona Bowl: San Jose State

Frisco Bowl: N/A

The top three choices are obvious, the fourth slot could legitimately go to any of four teams: Fresno State, San Diego State, Hawaii, or Air Force. There just aren’t enough data points to have an obvious choice. I wish the entire bowl season, outside of the playoff, would just try to schedule intriguing matchups, like the BYU-Coastal Carolina game. I can’t get enthused about a matchup with a MAC team and a middle of the road MWC team. I’m sure we’d all like to see our team play, but it would be nice to see some better games.

I put the Falcons ahead of San Diego State and Fresno State for a bowl bid this year.
