Mountain West Bowl Projections: Week Six

Will there be enough bowls for Mountain West teams?

NCAA Football: Boise State at Air Force Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Week six is behind us and another week of mass game cancellations leaves the bowl picture quite murky. The Mountain West has only four guaranteed bowl spots and some of those games are in questions. Some things to keep in mind for how we slotted teams: dates of bowl games and location. If a team makes the Mountain West Championship, there is no way they can play in the Frisco, Potato, or New Mexico Bowls. That leaves the Los Angeles Bowl (which will likely be cancelled) and the Arizona Bowl. Which means it is possible that the champion could be relegated to the Arizona Bowl. With that being said, we have decided to complete our projections as if all these bowl games will take place.

Zach:

Los Angeles Bowl: Boise State

New Mexico Bowl: Nevada

Potato Bowl: San Diego State

Arizona Bowl: San Jose State

Frisco Bowl: N/A

This scenario has Boise State playing San Jose State in the championship game. But San Jose might not play another home game this year and will likely have to practice elsewhere. It is also possible that Boise State might not have enough games fo qualify for the championship. The loser of the championship game almost has to go to Arizona because of the dates of the other bowl games. What a mess...

Graham:

Los Angeles Bowl: Boise State

New Mexico Bowl: Nevada

Potato Bowl: San Diego State

Arizona Bowl: San Jose State

Frisco Bowl: Fresno State

Boise State still has the Los Angeles bowl spot (assuming they play enough games to go to the Mountain West championship game) and the loser, which will probably be the winner of Nevada San Jose State will likely go to the Arizona bowl. The loser of the San Jose State Nevada game is predicted to go to the New Mexico bowl. As for Fresno State and San Diego State, the Bulldogs have one conference loss while the Aztecs have two, which is the difference between Fresno State being in the Frisco bowl and San Diego State in the Potato bowl.

Potato Bowl: San Diego State

Arizona Bowl: San Jose State

Frisco Bowl: Fresno State

It is a shame that San Jose State did not get its chance to prove itself on national television against Boise State, but it is a product of our current situation. I hope all teams play their finals games and get a chance to play for a bowl spot. After seeing Wyoming this week, they are a bowl caliber team, but there might not be many bowls for them to get its chance.

Los Angeles Bowl: Boise State

New Mexico Bowl: Nevada

Potato Bowl: San Diego State

Arizona Bowl: San Jose State

Frisco Bowl: Fresno State

I flipped Fresno State and SDSU this week. On one hand, the Aztecs get demoted for playing a P5 team after their conference game was cancelled due to Fresno State having a rise in covid numbers. On the other hand, it has become pretty clear that the Aztec offense is not cutting it this year. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have seemingly improved each week. It’s extremely unfortunate that we didn’t get to find any separation between Boise State and San Jose State, as they were unable to play. Nevada faltered, so they and the Spartans switch bowls.
