Mountain West Connection Bowl Projections: Week Eight

The regular season has concluded for most teams in the Mountain West and there aren’t many bowl spots for the conference. The New Mexico Bowl, Potato Bowl, and Arizona Bowl are all guaranteed spots for Mountain West teams. Both the Potato Bowl And New Mexico Bowl have their teams with Nevada headed to the Potato Bowl for the second consecutive year and in a bit of a surprise, Hawaii is headed to the New Mexico Bowl. The winner of the championship game is headed to Tuscon to play in the Arizona Bowl, the destination of the loser is still unknown.

New Mexico Bowl: Hawaii

Potato Bowl: Nevada

Arizona Bowl: Boise State

The Who Knows Where Bowl: San Jose State

There are some rumors floating around that the Mountain West might make a trade for the New Mexico spot or the Potato spot. That way the loser of the championship game does not have to play 5 days later. I could see some coaches opting out under that scenario. I really want the powers to be to make Boise State vs. Coastal Carolina happen, but that is just a dream. After I wrote this initial comment, it was announced that Hawaii would be going to the New Mexico Bowl and now I don’t know what to think.

Unknown Bowl:

Things are pretty set now. The winner of the championship game will go to the Arizona Bowl with the loser likely go to an unknown bowl. Rumors are that Nevada is playing in the Potato Bowl and Hawaii has surprised by being named to the New Mexico Bowl. I’m going with Boise State in the Arizona Bowl as I think they will beat the Spartans in the championship. But obviously the opposite wouldn’t surprise me either.

Unknown Bowl: San Jose State

There is talk the Mountain West is going to make a trade with another conference to place the winner of Boise State vs San Jose State into a better bowl game. However, with much unknown about the trades if they happen, it seems most likely that the winner of the conference championship will play in Arizona for the time being. San Jose State has played very well but they haven’t faced a team quite like Boise State. The weather looks to be good for that game in Las Vegas and Boise State’s defense looked good against Wyoming. This is going to be a game that is decided in the second half. Nevada has secured a spot in the Potato bowl against Tulane and Hawaii a bid in the New Mexico bowl vs Houston (moved to Texas this year). These are confusing times when it comes to determining bowl games but things will become clear once reports come on selection Sunday.

If I were a betting man, I’d pick the loser of the MWC title game being sent to the Gasparilla Bowl. But for now, I’ll leave that area unknown.

It’s good to see some teams getting the chance to play in some bowl games when we didn’t know if we were going to have a season. I hope all the bowls go on as planned and I really hope that the winner of the championship game gets to go to a good bowl game.
