The Mountain West schedule continues to be ravaged and bowl season continues to be in question. But our team at Mountain West Connection continues to push forward with bowl projections. Let’s see what changes our team made:
Zach:
Los Angeles Bowl: Boise State
New Mexico Bowl: Nevada
Potato Bowl: San Jose State
Arizona Bowl: Fresno State
Frisco Bowl: San Diego State
Let’s pretend we live in a world where all of these bowl games will actually happen. Even if it happens, I think only a few Mountain West teams are actually headed to a bowl game. It wouldn’t shock me if only Boise State, Nevada, and San Diego State actually play in bowls. But for this week, I decided to stick with five. I’m not sure Fresno State will play enough games to warrant putting them in a bowl game. This might open up a spot for Wyoming or Air Force.

Not too much change this week. Boise State is still projected in the LA Bowl and will be until they lose in conference if that happens. San Diego State has now lost to undefeated San Jose State and Nevada for two losses in conference play so they have a tougher road ahead of them and if Nevada and San Jose State win out, the winner of the Wolf Pack vs Spartans will secure a spot in the Mountain West title. San Jose State still has challenges against Boise State and Nevada and the Hawaii game may not be an easy game either so they may end up with a loss or two and get a spot in the Frisco Bowl against the MAC. If San Diego State had beaten San Jose State then I would flip the teams so San Jose State would be in the Potato Bowl and San Diego State in the Frisco. Fresno State has a disappointing loss to Hawaii and had their game against San Jose State canceled. They still have games vs San Diego State and at Nevada. If Fresno State was to beat both Nevada and San Diego State, then they would more than likely secure a spot in the Mountain West title game for a chance to play in the LA Bowl. It is clear where the winner of the Mountain West Championship game will end up but it is unclear where the rest of the teams may go and that will become more clear as the end of the season draws near and teams start to stand out more.

Either Fresno State or San Diego State will end up with three losses in conference play, so I’d like to take one of them out, but I just don’t see any other team that can catch them unless Wyoming wins out and beats Boise in their last game.

With 6 teams not playing this week and no upsets, things will mostly stay the same. This weekend’s Boise State/SJSU game will solidify what will happen with those two teams in their bowl games. It’s too bad that SDSU/Fresno State won’t get to do the same. But again, those 5 are the top teams in the conference and no one else really has a chance anymore. Either because of a lack of talent or a lack of opportunity (cancelled games).

Nevada showed us a lot in their win against San Diego State. It was a great showing, but was it enough to convince me they are better than Boise State? Probably not, but it looks like they might get their chance to play the Broncos for the chance to win the conference and play in the LA Bowl. San Jose State will have something to say about that. I think it hurt them a lot that their game against Fresno State was canceled because we could have learned a lot about the Spartans, and the Bulldogs too, from how they played at that game. But the Spartans will get their chance against both the Wolf Pack and Broncos to show us if they are the real deal or not.

Same as last week. Again, given the fact that the UNM basketball teams have had to move leads me to believe more that the NM Bowl won’t happen.
