After a misfire last week, power rankings are here! Keep in mind it’s still early in the season and to be honest, there really isn’t much to go off of after two games (or one game for a few teams). With that being said, take a look at what we think after two weeks:
1. Hawaii: 2 wins over Power 5 teams is more than anyone else in the conference can boast about, even if both games have been a bit too close for comfort at the end. Their offense didn’t score as much against the Beavers as one would’ve thought, but the Rainbow Warriors have more wins against the PAC-12 this year than anyone in the PAC-12 does. Enjoy it while it lasts, as a very tough game against Washington is on the horizon.
2. Boise State: Fans of the Broncos can call this ranking 1A, while haters can say they are a firm #2. Either way, they are 2-0 and the offense left many points on the board against Marshall, and the Thundering Herd will likely look like a much better win as the season goes on. Still, the Boise State defense plays on another level in the 2nd half of games, holding Marshall to ZERO yards Friday night.
3. Wyoming: They boost what might be the best win thus far from their week 1 win against Missouri, but struggled a bit against Texas State this week. Still, the Cowboys are 2-0 and their defense looks top notch. They’ll need to establish their passing game more if they want to keep winning, but that hasn’t stopped them yet.
4. Nevada: From world beaters to an other-wordly beaten, the Wolf Pack were hoping for a better showing against the Ducks. While they are better than what they showed Saturday, they still need to show it. The defense will need to shape up in a hurry if they want to build upon last season. Still, their offense will keep them in games.
5. Utah State: The Aggies let a game get away and took out their frustration on poor Stony Brook. Jordan Love and his offense looked more like the 2018 version on Saturday and now are hoping they are staying on that track moving forward.
6. San Diego State: The Aztecs tend to show up for big games and that showed as the offense fared well against the Bruins after being lifeless in the opening week against
7. Fresno State: The Bulldogs are likely the best 0-2 team in the nation right now, after hanging with USC for most of the game and losing to Minnesota on a pick in the endzone. Let’s face it, we all know they’ll be climbing the rankings when they come back from the bye week. They weren’t that far from 2-0 or 1-1 and that defense once again looks really solid.
8. Air Force: It’s hard to judge the Falcons after only one game against an inferior opponent, so here they are in the middle. They did exactly what they should have done when playing Colgate, taking care of business with little issue. Playing Colorado will provide a more accurate test.
9. UNLV: The Rebels are on shaky ground after a disappointing loss to Arkansas State following a convincing win against Southern Utah. As with every other team, it’s still too early to really know which team is the real 2019 UNLV. However, the early results don’t appear to be too great for Sanchez and his team.
10. Colorado State: The Rams got the win they were expected to get, but they need to show much on the field, especially on defense. Their schedule isn’t doing them any favors either, despite what seems like an improved offense over the 2018 version.
11. San Jose State: A win over Tulsa probably would’ve been considered an upset, but regardless, they lose the game and dropped to 1-1. The win over Northern Colorado may end up being the high point of the season, as things don’t get any easier with Arkansas looming after a bye week.
12. New Mexico: Yes they won their game. But an 8-point win over Sam Houston does not inspire much confidence that the Lobos can turn around their fortunes after the recent losing seasons. There weren’t a ton of positive takeaways from their win. It’s hard to find too many more wins on their schedule however.
Hawaii and Wyoming will likely be due for some regression soon, the Warriors a bit sooner than the Cowboys. The Bulldogs have a bye this week but expect them to run off a few wins once they resume playing. The Colorado game against Air Force is a big one for the Falcons to see if they are contenders or pretenders.
