The Aztecs (2-0) finally claimed their first victory over the Bruins (0-2) in program history.
San Diego State was led by quarterback Ryan Agnew, who threw for 293 yards and completed 23 of his 31 pass attempts. SDSU scored one touchdown through the air, which came on a 34 yard pass to wide receiver Kobe Smith.
Smith had an outstanding day as he caught seven passes for 131 yards. Jesse Matthews brought down five passes for 59 yards. Both receivers were huge contributors to the Aztec offense as they accounted for 190 yards of the total 293 passing yards.
Kicker Matt Araiza would go three for four from field goal range. He notched his first field goal at the end of the first quarter, which would give the Aztecs the lead for the rest of the game.
San Diego State still has not seemed to figure out their running game completely as they only rushed for 80 yards as a team.
Juwan Washington would lead all Aztec running backs with 41 yards.
Fortunately for SDSU, the secondary allowed the Aztecs to capitalize on turnovers and create more offensive opportunities that would lead to almost a 17 minute difference in time of possession.
Tariq Thompson came up huge again as he recovered a fumble in the first quarter. Tayler Hawkins and Dwayne Johnson Jr. were all over the field halting the offense with ten and seven tackles respectively.
The Aztecs have not slipped back to its bad habits from last season. Although it has only been two games it has not allowed teams to comeback in the second half.
San Diego State has the potential to be a dominant Mountain West team if it can consistently get productive plays from their secondary and balancing the play calls.
It will be interesting to see how head coach Rocky Long tries to get the Aztec running game going.
San Diego State will have another road game next week as they face off against New Mexico State.
