The SDSU Aztecs are off to a 3 - 0 start for the third time in the past four seasons after taking care of New Mexico State 31 - 10 on Saturday. The run offense exploded, the defense looked improved, the team overall continued to impress with another solid outing all around. Lets take a look at what everyone is getting on this weeks report card.
Offense
Quarterback (B+) An interception keeps Ryan Agnew out of the A range but overall still a positive outing for the QB who I have become infinitely more confident in the past few weeks than I thought I would be at the start of the season.
Running Back (A+) Jordan Byrd and Chance Bell both broke the 100 yard mark and the group averaged over 6 yards per carry in the game. This game made a statement that this backfield trio of Byrd, Bell and Jasmin can be looked to as being capable of breaking down a defense and controlling the tempo and timing of a game when needed.
Wide Receivers (A) Congratulations to Daniel Bellinger on grabbing his first collegiate TD. Seven different players had catches on the night so even with the passing yards down from previous weeks it is still a positive to see great distribution in this category.
Offensive Line (A+) Biggest week to week improving yet made by a position group so far this season. The downhill, hard-nosed, psychical run offense that has been the hallmark of Aztec football the past decade made its first appearance of the season. Almost rushing 300 yards on the night answers the question of wether or not this line had run blocking in their résumé.
Defense
Defensive Line (A-) The big men up front had the Aggies’ quarterback Josh Adkins decently uncomfortable more often than not. More pressure up front meant more rushed throws, so a pair of INT’s in the game for the Aztecs reflects a job well done upfront.
Linebackers (A-) Kyahva Tezino stock continues to rise as the season goes on, this time it was an interception that had his name being called out in a big way. Troy Cassidy also impressed with a four tackle night.
Secondary (B+) Local kid Luqman Barcoo snagged an interception. Giving up almost 300 yards on the day keeps them out of the A range.
Special Teams (A) Matt Araiza must have felt out of place not kicking with the game on the line for the first time in 2019 but he still got in on the scoring action with a 40 yard field goal.
The Aztecs are back at it this coming Saturday night at 7:30 at home versus Utah State who is 1-2 on the season and coming off a loss to Wake Forest.
