San Diego State will have a challenge week 1 when Weber State travels to SDCCU Stadium. Both programs are very successful with one of the highest win percentages in recent years.
The Aztecs are coming off of a 7-6 season with some impressive wins against Arizona State and Boise State. San Diego State ended the season on a different trend than it started. SDSU would lose five out of the last six games of the year. The last loss would come against Ohio in a 27-0 drought.
Head coach Rocky Long is looking to win his third Mountain West Conference coach of the year award in hopes of reaching another bowl game with the Aztecs.
Weber State finished 2018 with a 10-3 record and 7-1 in the Big Sky conference.
The Aztecs will need to stop the run against Weber State as Josh Davis averaged over 113 years per game. Lucky for SDSU they showed highlights of an effective run defense holding seven of their opponents to under 100 rushing yards. If the Aztecs begins this season as it did in 2018, it will have no problem defeating the Wildcats.
One factor that can drastically change the fate of the Aztecs is how well the secondary plays. Last season Weber State starting quarterback Jake Constantine threw 12 interceptions in 12 games. Safety Tariq Thompson should have another outstanding season. Darren Hall and Luq Barcoo will be put to the test in this matchup to see how effective they can be this year.
On the offensive side look out for running back Juwan Washington who will be a focal point go the Aztecs offense. Trying for his first 1,000 yard season in his final year at SDSU, I would expect Washington receiving most of the snaps.
This game should be close and competitive, but I believe the Aztecs have too much offensive firepower and match up well defensively against the Wildcats. I predict that San Diego State will win its week 1 game.
