MWC Recruiting Roundup 6-10-19

Hear from a few recruits and catch up on the new offers and commitments.

NCAA Football: UNLV at San Diego State Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

Now that camp season is upon us, the number of commits each week should see an increase. That’s the case this week anyway, as the Mountain West picked up three new commitments in the past week. Two were from UNLV and they also led the way in new offers with 14, so they debut on the lead photo this week.

2019 Cover Photo Total:

  • Colorado State: 3
  • Nevada: 3
  • San Jose State: 2
  • Fresno State: 1
  • Boise State: 1
  • Utah State: 1
  • Hawaii: 1
  • Air Force: 1
  • UNLV: 1

Commitment Spotlight:

RB Avery Morrow (Nevada)

“I committed on my visit because I think it is the best opportunity I have and it feels like a family down there. The coaches really like my size. I’m bigger then all of the running backs they currently have right now. They told me they want a bigger running back and they want to run the ball a lot in their offense. As a player, my best traits are running through tackles and my speed for my size. This offseason I’m spending time to improve my speed, flexibility, and getting my upper body stronger.”

Visit Recap:

DE LeShaun Bell (Fresno State)

“It went amazing, I really like what Coach Tedford and Coach Plemons and the rest of the guys have going on down there. I really enjoyed getting the opportunity to learn from Coach Plemons at the camp. I feel like he taught me a lot of stuff yesterday that’s gonna really up my game and make me a better player. I also really liked getting to meet the coaches in person. All of the coaches were are really cool people and I liked how they seemed to genuinely care about each and every person on the staff. Even down to the ball boy. I also liked taking the pictures. Also the weight room was beyond amazing. It was better than most other colleges that I’ve visited so far. And obviously that’s a big factor for me. There’s a lot that they liked about me, but he mainly talked about my get off, my motor, my knowledge of the game, and the fact that I’m just as efficient going inside as I am going outside and squeezing down. Also he liked my size and speed. I’ve been working on that since the opening and I got my 40 down to a 4.94. For next steps, I’ll plan to go to UCLA camp.”

Featured Recruit:

ATH Semaj Verner

  • 6’1” 180 lbs
  • Mayfair HS (CA)
  • MWC offers: New Mexico, SJSU, Nevada, Utah State, Colorado State, Boise State, SDSU, Fresno State, Hawaii

MWCConnection: As a player, what do you feel are your biggest strengths?

Verner: I’m a hardworking player, someone who is going to push myself to be better than the person ahead of me. I’m also a good teammate who tries to help everyone to get better. My strengths with have to be my length and my top end speed.

MWCConnection: On the flip side, what are the areas of your game you are working to improve upon before next year?

Verner: Different schools are offering me at different spots. Safety, corner, some even at receiver. I’m open to whatever, but feel most comfortable at corner. I’m trying to improve my speed so it could be top tier, like 4.4. I also want increase my mass and sit at at least 200 by college. Then, I just want to better improve my technique and football IQ.

MWCConnection: Do you have plans to visit any schools this spring?

Verner: I’ve already been to Nevada and SJSU. I want to visit Boise State, and Oregon State. Plus I plan to do the UCLA camp and possible the USC camp.

MWCConnection: What do you like about each of the MWC teams you have offers from?

Verner: With Boise State, they really have that vibe that I look for in schools. I have a great relationship with the DB coach there. They said they can just offer a place that feels like home and can really develop me and they love my length. San Diego State, Utah State, and Fresno State have also caught my eye and hopefully I can get to those places as well.
