MWC crowns a baseball champion.
Fresno State was the lone team remaining yesterday and clinched a birth to the NCAA tournament. For the first time ever they won the MWC tourney, beating UNLV and going back to the NCAA tourney for the first appearance since 2012, when they were led by this guy named Aaron Judge.
Aztecs have quickest MWC tourney exit in a decade.
It’s tough to compete when you lose three members of starting pitching rotation. San Diego State did as much as they could this season, still winning 30 games. However, they still came up well short of good run in the conference tournament. In fact, it was their quickest exit since 2010 and quite contrary to their usual dominance this time of year.
Athletes deliver letter to SJSU President.
A 19-page letter to be exact. This doesn’t look to be going away anytime soon and for a program like San Jose State, they can’t really afford any negative press. Some of the statements include mis-managing injuries, allegations of sexual assault against athletes going under-investigated, and feeling like the athletic director doesn’t care about student-athletes.
MBB in the Mountain West hopes to use in-game technology.
Say this about the MWC: they aren’t afraid to be the conference trying to become leader in incorporating new technology. Some has worked out well (replay, streaming games online), others not as much (Mountain West TV network anyone?). Now, they are pushing the NCAA to allow data to be available to coaches in real time during games. According to the article, it would open up 70 different statistical data points to coaches and therefore players during a game.
Broncos T&F going to National Championships.
Three athletes are anyway. Star runner Allie Ostrander will be returning to compete in the 3000 meter steeplechase while Kristie Schoffield ran a career best in the 800 meter race to get a return to Austin as well. Alexis Fuller will join them after posting the 5th best time in the 1500 meter.
