Check out Albuquerque Journal New Mexico Lobos football beat writer Steve Virgen’s piece on two-sport New Mexico athlete Jay Griffin IV. Griffin IV has been named team offensive MVP on the gridiron and won the 100 in track. That’s impressive. Griffin IV will be a redshirt junior this fall and hopes to get the Lobo football program back on track.
The Idaho Statesman’s Boise State football beat writer Dave Southorn wrote a thorough analysis of Boise State’s recently concluded spring football practices. The chief topic, the quarterback battle, remains as cloudy as it was before spring. Southorn notes the Broncos should have great depth at wide receiver, safety, and defensive line.
San Diego State pitcher Adrian Mardueno won multiple awards following two shut-out performances, being named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, and last but certainly not least: Collegiate National Baseball Pitcher of the Week. The Aztecs are 39-21 this season and will take on college baseball powerhouse Cal State Fullerton this weekend.
The task of replacing slot back John Ursua, who declared for the NFL Draft, is a tall one for the Hawaii Warriors. Rob Funkouser, a key member of the scout team last fall as a true freshman, is throwing his name in the hat to be one of the slot backs to make an impact. Funkouser has earned the bulk of the second-team reps this spring.
By the time this links post is up, the ink might be dry. Nevada is attempting to sign recently fired UCLA basketball coach Steve Alford. Alford is no stranger to the Mountain West, having coached at New Mexico. This would be a solid bounce back hire if the Pack can pull it off.
Could a familiar face return to the Mountain West?
Breaking; Steve Alford has emerged as a serious candidate to fill the coaching vacancy at Nevada, @TheAthleticCBB has learned— Seth Davis (@SethDavisHoops) April 10, 2019
