UNLV’s Max Smith Swings At A Pitch
Zak Krill/UNLV

#1. University of Nevada, Las Vegas (16-12)

The Rebels find themselves atop the No. 1 spot in this week’s rankings after taking a two-game series over UC Riverside, fueled by a high-powered offense. UNLV put up 11 and 12 runs over the two games and laced 24 hits as a team. The Rebels are peaking at a great time and are a team to keep an eye on when tournament play begins. They are in the midst of a three-game series against New Mexico.

Top Hitter: Max Smith vs. UC Riverside Game 2 (3-5, HR, 4 RBIs, 2 R)

Top Pitcher: Paul Richy vs. UC Riverside Game 2 (1.1 IP, 0 ER, 2 SO)

#2. San Diego State University (14-10)

The Aztecs continue their raise up our rankings! Jumping from #3 to #2 this week. They are rounding into form and are now playing up to the standard that everyone predicted in the preseason. SDSU went 2-1 in a three game weekend series against UNM. Winning the first two game 4-2 and 19-3. They would drop the finale though, losing 4-13. The would then play two games following this weekend series, one against Arizona, which they won 6-4. Then they would lose to California Baptist, 2-5. At 14 wins, the Aztecs ware tied with Nevada and San José State for the second most wins in the conference. San Diego welcomes Fresno State this weekend in a three game set

Top Pitcher: Aaron Eden vs. UNM, Game 1 (7.1 IP, 0 ER, 2 SO)

#3. San José State University (14-12)

Things have been rough for the Spartans as of late. The team came off a three game set against Fresno State, which saw them take 2 of 3 games in the series. But ever since that series ended, the offense for the team has dissipated. In 3 game, they haven’t scored a single run. Losing to Michigan 1-0 and 3-0. They the followed this up by dropping their weekend opener to Northwestern 1-0. This scoring drought will hopefully end for San José in their next game Northwestern on Saturday.

Top Hitter: Kellen Strahm vs. Fresno State, Game 3 (4-5, 2 RBIs, 3 R)

Top Pitcher: Andrew Mitchel vs. Northwestern, Game 1 (6.0 IP, 1 ER, 10 SO)

#4. University of Nevada (14-11)

Nevada falls to the No. 4 spot on the week after going 2-1 so far this week with a 8-2 loss against Grand Canyon. The two runs snapped six-straight games where the Pack recorded five or more runs, but inconsistent outings on the mound have led a couple of games slip away and it has cost them in the standings as a result. Josh Zamora homered in three-straight games and Nevada took game one versus Air Force off a Jaylon McLaughlin walk-off base hit.

Top Hitter: Jaylon McLaughlin vs. Grand Canyon (3-3, 3B. 2B, 1B, 1 BB)

Top Pitcher: Dalton Gomez vs. San Francisco (6 IP, 3 ER, 10 H, 4 SO)

#5. Fresno State University (12-7)

A pair of victories over CSU Bakersfield and San Diego State put the Bulldogs to the No. 5 spot. Coming off a three-game series loss to San Jose State, the Bulldogs have bounced-back with a balanced attack at the plate and on the mound. Fresno State is currently playing the Aztecs in a three-game series, they took game one with an impressive 5-4 win.

Top Hitter: TJ Arruda vs. CSU Bakersfield (3-5, HR, 3 RBIs, 3 R)

Top Pitcher: Ryan Jensen Vs. San Diego State Game 1 (7.2 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 5 SO)

#6. United State Air Force Academy (10-12)

The Falcons have had a rough go of it lately. In their last 6 game, they have gone 1-5. Getting swept by Dallas Baptist in the process. They then split a two game set against Pacific. Last but not least, they dropped their series opener to Nevada on Friday, 3-4. Air Force needs to the right the ship and fast if they hope to jump back in the race for the MWC crown.

Top Hitter: Ashton Easley vs. Pacific, Game 2 (2-5, 1 R)

Top Pitcher: Jake Gilbert vs. Dallas Baptist, Game 1 (7.0 IP, 1 ER, 5 SO)

#7. University of New Mexico (12-12)

The Lobos have fallen from grace in our rankings. After rankings at 4th last week, they now find themselves at the bottom of the barrel. In the last seven games that they’ve played, their record is 2-5. It’s been tough sledding for the Lobos. But they will look to get things back on track this weekend, as they take on UNLV.

Top Hitter: Jared Mang vs. SDSU, Game 3 (4-5, 2 RBIs, 4 R)

Top Pitcher: Drew Gillespie vs. SDSU, Game 3 (4.0 IP, 3 ER, 2 SO)
