Bronco Women Lose a Heartbreaker

The Broncos can’t hold on to a late lead in Corvallis

NCAA Basketball: Boise State at Wyoming Troy Babbitt-USA TODAY Sports

The odds were stacked against the Lady Broncos on Saturday afternoon. They got a lower seed than expected, were forced to play a true road game, and had to deal with some questionable officiating.

The Broncos had a 66-62 lead with 17 seconds left in regulation. After an Oregon State layup, the Broncos inbounded the ball to Braydey Hodgins. Hodgins was pushed to the floor, and the refs called a jump ball while the ball was between Hodgins legs. Oregon State responded with a great inbound play that resulted in a Boise State foul. After the Beavers connected on both free throws, Marta Hermida missed a solid look that would have won the game.

Boise State ran out of steam in overtime; they missed a handful of wide open threes and some critical free throws. It was a valiant effort by the Broncos, who were 15 point underdogs. Hermida led the way for the Broncos with 22 points, while Riley Lupfer and Rachel Bowers combined to score 24 points off the bench.

The Broncos missed out on an opportunity to score the first tournament win in school history. However, the Broncos bring back a ton of talent next year and will likely be the favorites to win the Mountain West.
