Week Four: MWC Baseball Power Rankings

Who’s The Best Of The Best?

The Spartans Completed The Series Sweep Over UNLV This Past Weekend.
Terrell Lloyd/SJSU

#1. San José State University (12-8)

The Spartans are hot coming off a successful weekend series against their conference rivals, UNLV. SJSU was able to complete the sweep over the Rebels, beating them 2-1, 6-5, and 7-6. They got a good mix of strong hitting and pitching over the course of the weekend, and this has translated into the best record in the MWC. They did however drop a mid-week contest against Sacramento State, losing 7-2. But even with this lost in mind, San José is still one of the strongest teams in the conference, and #1 in this week’s rankings. Looking ahead, the Spartans hit the road this weekend to take on Fresno State

Top Hitter: Johnny Mendoza vs. UNLV Game 2 (2-3, 2 H, 1 R, 2 RBIs)

Top Pitcher: Andrew Mitchel vs UNLV Game 1 (8.0 IP, 1 ER, 6 SO)

#2. University of Nevada (11-8)

The Wolf Pack are starting to find its groove against its conference foes, taking two games out of three games versus New Mexico despite a season-worst outing from freshman Owen Sharts. Nevada averaged four runs per contest and got another stellar start from southpaw Ryan Anderson in the process. Along with the Lobos, the Pack finished the week with a 6-5 victory over Saint Mary’s. Nevada’s balanced play has earned them a No. 2 rank for the week and a bright future for the road ahead.

Top Hitter: Josh Zamora vs. UNM Game 3 (3-4, 2B, HR, 1 RBI)

Top Pitcher: Ryan Anderson vs. UNM Game 1 (6.2 IP, 1 ER, 6 SO)

#3. San Diego State University (11-8)

Things seem to be trending in the right direction for the Aztecs. After some early season struggles, San Diego looks like they’re back to their winning ways. They are coming off a series sweep of Seattle U this past weekend, where they won 6-5, 12-8, and 11-5. The offense showed up in all 3 games, and they looked like the powerhouse we all expected them to be! Much like San José, The Aztecs did drop a Tuesday game to Loyola Marymount. But they will look to return to the win column as they travel to Albuquerque to take on UNM.

Top Hitter: Brian Lenohardt vs. Seattle U Game 2 (3-4, 3 H, 1 R, 4 RBIs)

Top Pitcher: Michael Paredes vs Seattle U Game 2 (4.1 IP, 1 ERA, 8 SO)

#4. University of New Mexico (11-9)

The Lobos come into this week’s rankings a bit down. UNM is on a three-game losing streak, starting with a loss last Sunday to Nevada. They followed up this loss by dropping two straight to Oklahoma in a mid-week series, losing 8-1 and 8-6. With three straight L’s in the column, the Lobos drop from #1 to the forth. UNM will look to get things back on track this weekend, as San Diego State comes to town.

Top Hitter: Brayden Merritt vs. Oklahoma Game 2 (2-4, 2 H, 1 R, 1 RBI)

Top Pitcher: Tristin Lively vs. Oklahoma Game 1 (3.2 IP, 3 ER, 4 SO)

#5. University of Nevada, Las Vegas (12-8)

The Rebels find themselves at the No. 5 spot after the San Jose State Spartans swept them in a three-game series on the road. UNLV struggled to escape innings while the Spartans feasted with RISP, they gave up at least five runs and nine hits twice during the three-game contest. This happened after UNLV lost a heartbreaker, 2-1, to open the series. The Rebels did close the week with a 6-5 victory over CSUN, but they came away with a disappointing 1-3 record and fell to 12-8 overall.

Top Hitter: Kellen Strahm versus SJSU Game 3 (4-4, 3B, 3 RBI, SB)

Top Pitcher: Cameron Jabara vs. SJSU Game 1 (8.2 IP, 2 ER, 4 SO)

#6. Fresno State University (9-5)

Fresno State didn’t get much action this week, their three-game series against the Air Force Falcons was cancelled due to serious weather concerns. That being said, the Bulldogs closed the week on a strong note with a 17-2 rout over Pacific. The lack of games played puts Fresno State at the No. 6 spot, but they’re still a dangerous team heading into conference play with plenty of pop at the plate.

Top Hitter: McCarthy Tatum vs. Pacific (2-4, HR, 5 RBI)

Top Pitcher: Davis Moore vs. Pacific (2.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 SO)

#7. Air Force (9-7)

There almost seems to be more games that have been postponed this season for the Falcons than have been played. Air Force and Fresno State were unable to play any of their games this past weekend. This left the Falcons with a mid-week series against Northern Colorado and Nebraska. In the 3 games they play, they went 1-2. Beating Northern Colorado 6-0, then dropping the two games to Nebraska, 6-7 and 3-12. The Falcons will look to add to their win total this weekend, as they take on Dallas Baptist.

Top Hitter: Nic Ready vs. Nebraska Game 1 (2-5, 2 H, 1 RBI)

Top Pitcher: Jake Gilbert vs Northern Colorado (3.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 SO)
