Welcome to another Tuesday and happy conference tournament week! We have a lot to keep you updated on, from the final regular season AP Poll to All-MW awards. We also have an update on some Spring football and a new player of the week. Take a look!
Week 19 AP poll
In the final regular season AP poll Nevada checks in at number 14 after getting revenge in a beatdown of San Diego State. Utah State who had finally started to get votes checks in at what would be #29 after receiving 34 votes. Gonzaga will head into postseason play as the #1 team followed by Virginia and North Carolina.
All-Mountain West media awards
It was a big day for Utah State as they bring home majority of top awards. The media voted Sam Merrill player of year while Neemias Queta brought home Freshman of the year and defensive player of the year. To top it all off, first year coach Craig Smith was awarded coach of the year. Braxton Huggins wins newcomer of the year. The All-Mountain West first team as voted by the media includes Merrill, Caleb Martin, Jordan Caroline, Nico Carvacho, and Justin James.
San Diego State continues Spring practice
The Aztecs, due to NCAA restrictions, finally practiced in full pads on Saturday. Rocky Long is excited to get rolling in full contact drills. Agnew is the incumbent QB but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have competition. Carson Baker and Jordon Brookshire rotated in for several series during the team scrimmage and are expected to be competition for Agnew going forward. Juwan Washington won’t see his role as starter challenged anytime soon as he got one carry before watching his soon to be successors take most of the remaining snaps. The Aztecs are a bit short on the offensive and defensive lines until the new recruiting class arrives but it will certainly be interesting to see how the Aztecs fill out the line on both sides of the ball. Make sure to read the entire SD Union Tribune article to get the full scoop on SDSU football.
Air Force long snapper making noise as an intriguing NFL prospect
Austin Cutting, perhaps Air Force’s most anonymous player, might not be so anonymous anymore. Cutting had a near perfect pro day, attracting the most personalized attention from scouts. The NFL prospect was executing his snaps with near flawless accuracy. Cutting was the only Falcon to earn an invitation to a postseason showcase. As Cutting continues to perform well it becomes more likely that an NFL team will take a shot on him even though he is supposed to report to Georgia after graduating.
