Our version of the all-conference team plus awards

Seemingly as quickly as it arrived, the college basketball regular season has concluded. There is still the conference tournament, which should be quite competitive as Nevada has been knocked down a peg or two the past few weeks and Fresno State and Utah State continue their winning ways. Plus this thing called March Madness will be occurring again this year.

Anyway, the end of another season means it’s time for another edition of MWCConnection post-season all-MWC team and awards. As usual, different members of our team submitted their ballots for the all-conference team as well as pre-season awards. We tallied the votes and compiled our Mountain West Connection All-MWC Men’s Basketball Team, as well as our post-season awards. Here’s the pre-season version for the sake of comparison.

The Team

Sam Merrill (JR, Utah State)

Caleb Martin (SR, Nevada)

Justin James (SR, Wyoming)

Braxton Huggins (SR, Fresno State)

Nico Carvacho (JR, Colorado State)

Notes:

  • The top three players were unanimous selections, and rightfully so.
  • Jordan Caroline was the other player receiving votes. It’s pretty clear they were the top six players in the league this season.

The Awards

Player of the Year

Sam Merrill (JR, Utah State)

Defensive Player of the Year

Neemias Queta (FR, Utah State)

6th Man

Jazz Johnson (JR, Nevada)

Freshman of the Year

Neemias Queta (FR, Utah State)

Newcomer/Breakout Player of the Year

Braxton Huggins (SR, Fresno State)

Coach of the Year

Justin Hutson (Fresno State)

Craig Smith (Utah State) 3

Notes:

  • Coach of the year was a two person race between Hutson and Smith. Both were deserving for the incredible years their teams had, especially considering they were both first-year coaches. Our team went with Smith, but it was extremely close.
  • POY, DPOY, 6th man, FOY, and Breakout/Newcomer were one vote shy of being consensus picks.

There it is. So let’s hear it. Do you agree or disagree with our selections? Who did we snub? Who did we put on here that shouldn’t be? Let’s hear you feedback in the comments section.
