Mountain West Connection Bracketology-Week Seven

Not much has changed as the top teams took care of business

NCAA Basketball: UNLV at San Diego State Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

It hasn’t happened much this year, but things pretty much went as expected this past week. Boise State came close to playing spoiler, but they failed to pull off upsets over San Diego State and Fresno State. Nevada continues to look awesome, and Utah State dominated in their only contest of the week. Let’s see where the top teams in the league are projected to go.

Nevada:

I still think the Wolf Pack will be the only team to represent the Mountain West in the NCAA tournament. Unfortunately, Nevada’s projected seeding and national ranking continue to be hampered by poor play throughout the conference. For that reason, I am continuing to project the Wolf Pack as a three-seed in the West region. Maybe we will get lucky and see a showdown with Gonzaga at some point.

Utah State

The Aggies continue to have a slight advantage over Fresno State with their recent victory. This week could be a trap for Utah State, as they have games against New Mexico and Boise State. Both of those teams have proven that they can hang with the league heavyweights. I am still projecting Utah State to the NIT as a three-seed.

Fresno State

It kind of feels like the Bulldogs may have peaked too early. They almost lost to Boise State last week and face a stiff test this Saturday in Reno. If the Bulldogs can pull off the upset over the Wolf Pack, that will get them back in the bubble discussion. However, I am still projecting Fresno State to the NIT as a six-seed.

San Diego State

Like I said last week, I’m still not ready to project the Aztecs to the NIT or NCAA tournament. But this team has the skill and discipline to do some damage in the conference tournament. They continue to be my team to keep an eye on.

Are there any other teams that have a shot to reach the postseason? What are your thoughts?
