Signing day plug, coaching hires, bowl games

NCAA Football: Boise State at Utah State Brian Losness-USA TODAY Sports

Golden Flashes finished strong to secure bowl bid

The attention this week has rightfully been on signing day, but believe it or not there are bowl games this weekend! On Friday, Utah State will take on Kent State of the MAC in the Frisco Bowl. Read above for a preview on the Golden Flashes.

Danny Gonzales introduced as new Lobo football coach

Rumors have turned into reality as New Mexico football filled the void left by the recently fired Bob Davie. Arizona State defensive coordinator and UNM alum Danny Gonzales has taken the Lobos job. Gonzales has coached under Rocky Long and Herman Edwards, and being from New Mexico was a big factor. Considering how other Mountain West coaches currently at their alma mater (Harsin, Rolovich, Calhoun, etc.) are doing, can’t blame the Lobos for making this move.

Fresno State makes strong hire in Kalen DeBoer – but it’s the timeline that’s telling

While the Colorado State, UNLV, and even New Mexico openings ruled the headlines, Fresno State’s coaching search felt a bit more covert. Maybe that’s because the hire was obvious. Former Fresno State offensive coordinator and Indiana offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer has returned to Fresno after only a year away to takeover after Jeff Tedford’s surprise exit.

Contract details for Gonzales

As usual...

I don’t typically plug our own stuff, but our very own Mike Wittmann puts in a ton of work on the recruiting front for the MWCConnection. Please give our signing day coverage a look.

On the Horizon:

  • Thursday: The Boise State Vegas Bowl preview
  • Thursday: Our “Recruiting Road So Far” series kicks off. Each post will look at what each team accomplished during the initial signing day and what work needs to be done before the second one in February.
