The Mountain West has suspended four Nevada Football players after the post-game brawl versus UNLV.
Defensive back Austin Arnold, defensive tackle Hausia Sekona, defensive back Daniel Brown and linebacker Gabriel Sewell are the four players suspended. Arnold sparked the brawl by shoving Rebel quarterback Kenyon Oblad to the ground from behind.
Arnold received a two-game suspension, Sekona and Brown were both given one-game suspensions and Sewell only received a half-game suspension. The suspensions will be effective immediately beginning Jan. 3 for the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl versus Ohio.
Brown, Sekona and Sewell are all seniors. Due to the suspensions, Brown and Sekona have officialy played their final game with the Wolf Pack. Sewell will return for the second half of the bowl game. Arnold, a junior, will also miss the opening game next season versus UC Davis.
“The Mountain West conducted a thorough review of the incident and we are appreciative of their efforts and accept their findings,” University Athletics Director Doug Knuth said. “We are disappointed for the seniors who will miss their final game playing for the Wolf Pack. Our football program is moving forward with preparations for the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.”
Arnold, Sekona, Brown and Sewell are all starters on the defense. They are also expected to be without defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel, along with assistant coaches David Lockwood and Mike Chamoures, who they parted ways with earlier this week.
Brown and Sewell were both All-Mountain West honorable mention honorees this year. Brown totaled 41 tackles, three tackles-for-loss and four interceptions. Those four interceptions are tied for second in the conference behind SDSU’s Luq Barcoo. Sewell has had a down year, tallying a career-low 52 tackles with 5.5 tackles-for-loss.
Sekona totaled 31 tackles in 11 games, including 3.5 tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks. Arnold added 51 tackles, including one interception that was returned 40 yards for a touchdown versus San Jose State.
The suspensions are for violations of Mountain West Rule 4 — Sportsmanship.
