Mountain West Rooting Guide: Week 13

Will we hit the finish line this weekend?

NCAA Football: Utah State at Wake Forest Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

The race for the Mountain West became clearer over the weekend. Fresno State was eliminated after falling to the San Diego State. Wyoming was eliminated after losing to Utah State. Nevada was eliminated after San Diego State beat Fresno State (they can still win a share of the division, but they will not play in the championship game). Colorado State was eliminated after a loss to Air Force. Let’s take a look at who is left in the race and what they need to happen.

San Diego State and Hawaii

It’s too bad this game is happening a week later. But the outcome is the same regardless, win and your in. The conference could not ask for a more meaningful game. Hawaii will travel for the Mountain West Championship game. San Diego State could host if the winner of the Mountain has two losses, which appears unlikely at this point.

Boise State

Beat Utah State and the Broncos will clinch the division and host the title game. A loss does not eliminate the Broncos, but they would need some help to get in. Boise State should also be pulling for the Falcons to beat New Mexico. A three way tie likely comes down to Air Force and Boise State. If Air Force can’t make it into the CFP rankings, the Broncos would likely have the edge in the computers.

The New Year’s Six is a long shot, but Cincinnati has a tough games against Temple this week and Memphis travels to South Florida. Boise State fans should also be rooting for Navy to defeat SMU.

Utah State

It’s pretty simple for the Aggies, beat Boise State and hope Air Force loses. The status of Jordan Love is in question, but Boise State is facing a barrage of injuries and this game suddenly looks more winnable for Utah State. Air Force is unlikely to lose to New Mexico, but they have a tough week 14 game against Wyoming in Colorado Springs.

Air Force

Win the last two weeks and hope Utah State beats Boise State. Air Force has been playing great football lately and has a shot to get in to the CFP rankings.

Are there any scenarios I am missing? What do you guys expect to happen this weekend?
